I’m Swapping My Nokia N96 For A Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

I did a bit of wheeler dealing with upgrading my mobile phone yesterday.  I’ve had my heart set on a Sony Ericsson X1 for a long time now, but in order to get one I would have had to switch mobile networks to Vodafone.  I’m not a big fan of Vodafone who are the only network launching the Xperia X1, particularly as the reception is bad in my area, and my current network T-Mobile is a lot cheaper.

But, then I had a brainwave and I decided to see what upgrade deal T-Mobile would give me on my Nokia N95.  I wondered if they would give me a good enough deal on a new handset that I could sell on eBay and a deal on a new contract, that would provide enough cash for me to buy an unlocked Xperia X1 that I could use on T-Mobile.

In the end T-Mobile offered me a fantastic deal and gave me a Nokia N96 for free, as well as a much better contract for only 1 pound extra per month.  To get an equivalent contract with Vodafone would cost me around 15 pounds extra per month, so the savings on my contract over 18 months, plus the money I will get for the Nokia N96 will be more than enough to cover the cost of an unlocked Sony Ericsson X1, which I’ve just ordered from play.com for 500 pounds.

It’s been a long wait for the Xperia X1, and hopefully it’ll arrive next week so that I can finally get my hands on what will be the best smartphone on the market in my view for at least the next 12 months.  I’m fairly certain my next upgrade will be to a Google Android phone as I think the OS is the future of mobile services, but the handsets need some time to catchup.

    Expansys will sell you an Xperia X1 subsidised with a T-mobile contract - no problem! I have mine on order with them.

    @Mike

    Yes, but I’m already with T-Mobile and I got a better renewal deal direct from T-mobile - I’m getting flext 50 for £36/pm and a free Nokia N96, rather than £55/pm from Expansys and having to pay £130 for the handset.

    The N96 is going for £300-400 on eBay.  I’m working on getting:

    • getting min £250 quid for the Nokia N96 - will prob get more
    • Saving £10×18 months=£180 on T-mobile rather than Voda - will prob be more
    • Buying a Xperia X1 for 500

    This gives a total ‘cost’ of (500-250-180) of £70 for getting an Xperia X1 on T-mobile, Vs the min £100 I’d have to pay if I went to Voda.  If I get an extra £50 for the Nokia, or Voda charge me £150 for the X1 or I save even more on my bills then my Xperia gets even ‘cheaper’.

    You won’t be getting the Sony X1 next week from Play.com.  Due in at the end of October.  Check out their website.  Changed the dates three times in two weeks.  Bunch of ars&^oles.

    Grrr thought I was finally going to get my hands on one - I even called play.com to check I wasn’t going to go to the back of a long waiting list like at expansys. Oh well, guess I’ll just have to calm down and wait!

    Let’s hope X1 will be worth the wait. I am quite tired of the limited choices of smart phones like Omnia and 3GIphone. Frankly speaking,  I believe our choice will be right.

    I believe Sony Ericsson is tying to combat HTCs market share

    Spoke to the Sony Ericsson store in London.  They are not expecting the phone until the end of the month.
