Three Great Directories for Finding New Web 2.0 Sites

View Comments January 8, 2009 | T.J. Mininday

I originally wrote about an awesome Web 2.0 directory back in 2006 called GoWeb20. It essentially gave you just about every new and up and coming Web 2.0 site that the world was to behold. I’ve recently become increasingly annoyed with the site, as it has become extremely bloated and almost brings my machine to a halt at times.

So, I decided to look elsewhere for some alternatives for finding many of the Web 2.0 sites out there. It wasn’t hard to find many, but I was looking specifically for directories, not business like sites, like TechCrunch. Here are three of the ‘big’ ones I found:

KillerStartups
Killer Startups is specifically designed towards startup companies. They review 15 new companies per day and rank them according to votes, similar to Digg. It’s a great place to find brand new sites, not necessarily ones that have been around for a while.

Listio
Listio is a simple Web 2.0 directory. They give quick snippets of what each of these sites are, and then displays similar projects down below. It can be quite addictive browsing through the dozens of related web applications that exist out on the www.

NetWebApp
NetWebApp is very similar to Listio, in that it displays web applications in directory form, but it organizes them by category. You can simply select what area of web apps you are looking for.

Directory sites such as these come in handy when you are looking for something new to sign up for, or simply something new to write about on your blog.

Do you have any other suggestions?

  • Very cool indeed. Big thanks for the links.  Killerstartups is indeed funny with some of those website names. Nice links...much appreciated. Great directory as well...nice will spend some time with GoWeb2.0
  • Glad to have read this post. Never occurred to me that there could be a directory for these types of site. The best part is that they list sites which offer some great and innovative applications.

Your post made me want to discover further and I came across awards for Web2.0 sites (seomoz.org/web2.0). Its a good list to read, cause all the time we check out sites in categories related to our interest. So it becomes a discovery to see interesting sites on the other site

  • Great links thanks. I already browse killerstartups, mostly to laugh at the daft web2.0 business names that people come up with! :)
  • Please remove the first one.Thank you for a short review of these sites. Most directories seems about outdated now.

  • There's SubmitterBot that you can use to submit all your articles to various directories to populate your content on the net.
  • One can submit their blog or website in aboutonlinetips directory without any linkback image for free.

  • Regarding the GoWeb20 site, it actually sends a steady stream of traffic.  I have a site that was listed with it in beginning and still get traffic.  Also, in regards to traffic, KillerStartUps sends a good burst of traffic then it tapers off to nothing.

Thought people who work on/with Web 2.0 sites would like to know about the benefits of being listed.
  • killerstartups is more than enough if you want to Indian specific startups there is nenonline.org a resource site for entrepreneurs
