Take a Quiz to Help You Choose a Linux Distribution

For people who are new to Linux, deciding on what distribution to use their system can be a very confusing affair. There are a large number of distributions available, based on different desktops, system requirements, purpose of installing Linux, etc.

One way of deciding which version of Linux is right for you is to take a quiz that is designed to find the best match, not only for your computer, but also for your level of skill. One such quiz has been developed by Zegenie Studios.

The quiz has been designed to be quick and easy to understand for almost any user. Questions range from the age of your computer and the type of software you prefer to run to whether or not you know how to partition a hard drive. I would say there are about 15 questions of so in the entire quiz. At the end of it, you are presented with a list (in descending order) of the Linux distributions that closely match your needs. The reasons why you should select or not consider a particular distro are given as well.

Zegenie Studio’s Linux quiz is available in many languages so even non-English people can take the test. As someone who is looking to familiarize myself with Linux and also to test if the quiz really works, I took the test myself. Based on my preferences, OpenSuse was suggested as the Linux distro most suitable for me. Ubuntu and Mandriva were a close second, losing out only because the quiz determined that my computer might be too slow to run them comfortably.

Are you contemplating a switch to Linux? What criteria are you using to help you select a Linux distribution? Let me know.

  • Fun. I took the test and two of the 100% matches were distributions that I currently have installed... the 95% matches with one exception were distros I'd tried and moved away from.
  • Pretty much anymore answers A, B and C are any Ubuntu-based distro. They just work, whether you are a luser or a sysadmin. I have Linux Mint on my laptop. I used to hate linux, being a dyed-in-the-wool BSD guy, but Linux Mint has won me over, a little.

If you're adept, and you're not scared, give FreeBSD a try. There's so much to like. If you're anything like me you'll see how great it is in your first session.
