Friday Fun: Porsche Experience Drive Videos

This week I spent a day driving a Porsche Cayman S around Silverstone at the new Porsche Experience facility in the UK. Porsche have a very good program for owners where they get to spend a day a year improving their driving skills. This doesn’t just mean learning how to drive faster, and a lot of time is spent learning how to cope with skids, how to be more aware on public roads, and how to drive on ice (brilliant!).

At the end of the day we had an opportunity to get driven around the track by Ian Ashley, an ex-F1 driver from the 1970s, in a Porsche Cayenne. I filmed the whole amazing experience on my new Canon Powershot G10 (review later) and the video is below. It was amazing to see how hard he pushed the Cayenne, which is supposed to be a SUV/4x4.

At the end of the video he gives a quick talk on his F1 experiences. My favourite quote is how in those days you used to ‘fill Dead Men’s shoes’, which just sums up how dangerous F1 used to be. I also loved how he had to slip in a story about meeting air stewardesses!!

  • I'd love to go around Silverstone in a Cayman.
F1 is still a very dangerous sport but not as dangerous these days.
  • Great video! I wish I had a chance to drive that car one day! : )
