National Geographic and the Discovery channel are not the only places where you can get a taste of nature. With the advent of various advancements in digital video and photography, there are now various internet sources that allow you to have the same experience as you would with television.
Of course, if you want to brush up your wildlife skills, you might as well follow the experts and you can do that by visiting ARKive. Started with the aid of Sir David Attenborough, ARKive aims to be a complete library of visual information for wildlife. As a non-profit website, all media on the website is free to view.
ARKive is a nature lover’s delight. The site hosts high-quality images and footage from all over the world. This includes work by internationally acclaimed filmmakers and photographers, which are not available elsewhere. In the site’s own words, it is the ‘Noah’s Ark’ of the internet, doing its bit for conservation, albeit virtually.
The site not restricted to scientists and educators but is also open to the general public. Visitors can look at pictures and video of whatever interests them and also read up on interesting facts about various animals. People can incorporate the media on the site for personal use. For teachers and students, ARKive has an offshoot called ARKive Education, which has resources like lesson plans, games, etc.
As someone who has a studied wildlife and has a special interest in them, sites like ARKive are a like a treasure chest. Even if you’re not into wildlife, the site is still a good source of media, especially for some stunning photographs.
What do you think of ARKive? How would you use the media on the site? Let me know.
