It looks like SSDs are v slowly becoming more affordable. The new OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD got a very very good review from Bit Tech.

Granted it is still £300+ to buy which is ridiculous but it offers better performance in every aspect compared to mechanical drives and is much cheaper than the Intel X25-M

Ok, added an identical WDC 320gb SATA drive and went raid0. Results of benchtest before and after:

sequential uncached write- 75.85mb/sec--->150.89mb/sec
sequential uncached read- 73.75mb/sec--->143.44mb/sec
random uncached write- 47.39mb/sec--->87.47mb/sec
random uncached read- 28.12mb/sec--->30.92mb/sec

Is the system blindingly faster than it was? Not really. Maybe shaved a second or two off the boot time. File copies are noticeably faster, and backup time is about an hour quicker than it was. Overall, a very nice $50 upgrade. Just make sure you have a good backup strategy in case a drive fails.

Three additional (and significant) benefits to SSD storage are reduced noise, heat, and power consumption. These are already becoming de facto storage in netbooks where volume of storage is much less of a concern and power consumption & weight are paramount.

I think that without a doubt SSDs are the way of the future. They quickly gaining size, falling in cost and improving on the issues with write speed.

Granted they are still some way off becoming affordable for the average user, but the cost per gig has fallen substantially over the past couple of years.

I believe the issues with write speed are slowly becoming a thing of the past by using dual drive controller chips (and probably more in the future)

Unfortunately I haven’t had the pleasure of using SSD yet, but hopefully I will upgrade next year when it is a little more affordable.
