Take if from a Mac user, forget about all those other RSS readers and go straight to Vienna.

Mail? Mail.app has been the best mail solution going since the NeXT days. It's simple and it stays out of your way, does IMAP, and if you need additional functionality there are plugins out there. Thunderbird is a nice mail client, for a web browser, but it doesn't adhere to OS X interface guidelines, and I despise apps that don't look like the rest of the system. Just what is it you can't do on Mail that you would use Thunderbird for? Even on linux, I prefer Evolution to Thunderbird.

PDF. Well, Preview does it all and it's part of the default install. OS X's imaging system is built on pdf, and who better than Apple to provide a lightweight pdf viewer/web browser plugin that does it all with almost no resource usage? If you like a different interface, Acrobat fits the bill, but like anything Adobe it kind of takes over your system with all the other crap it installs and uses a lot of resources, comparatively.
