How long have you stared at your PC today? Two hours? Five? That’s unhealthy.
If you’re like me and the armies of harassed information professionals, chances are you’ve given your eyes a nasty beating. And those eyes don’t take it sitting down. They rebel with headaches, blurry vision and violent redness. Keep this up and you face vision loss in the next 5 to 10 years. Or at the very least, expect your spectacles to thicken by a centimeter. That isn’t too sexy.
Eye docs recommend looking away from the monitor every 15 minutes. That’s good advice but how often can you remember to follow it? These docs also push those special multicoated anti glare specs. I’ve tried these $20 solutions but found them worthless. Multicoated specs merely minimize glare; but remember that glare isn’t the sole cause of strain. The true cause of strain is the fact that your eyes are perpetually crossed at an accute angle. When you read a book or look at a screen, your eyes have to focus a short distance. This causes prolonged bulging of occular muscles. That isn’t healthy and it degrades eyesight in the long run. Now contrast that with looking at a distance. Notice how relaxed your eyes feel? The farther you look, the less crossed your eyes are. In fact, when you daydream, your eyes defocus and stare straight ahead.
It’s only recently that an optical company crafted a solution that exploits this phenomenon. Relaxo developed a set of glasses that uses prisms which prevent the painful crossing of the eyes- even when reading at close range. To illustrate the effect, try this:
1. Hold a pencil upright 15cms in front of your eyes. Focus on the pencil for approximately 10 seconds.
2. You should then experience a cross-eye sensation which is convergence of your eye muscles.
Now stare into the distance for 10 seconds. Notice the cool relaxation of your eye and facial muscles. That’s how healthy eyes should feel!
The spectacles developed by this company allow your eyes to focus perpetually into infinity even when reading monitors up close. I purchased a set of their glasses and felt almost instant relief. My eyes stopped watering. It was like magic! I found myself typing with exuberance again. Are you ready to rejuvenate your PC life?
