View Comics with Your iPhone

The iPhone is so much more than just a phone. It has a whole host of features including internet access and iPod capabilities. Another thing the iPhone can do is allow you to read comics on it.

There are a lot of iPhone apps available that can do the job. A good example is one called ComicZeal. This app converts native .cbr and .cbz files to its own format that is customized to give you the best comic-reading experience on your phone. Comics can be viewed in both portrait and landscape form, depending on the user’s preference. Another advantage is that ComicZeal remembers the last position of a file so if you have to abandon reading, you can always come back and pick up where you left off.

While ComicZeal is an excellent comic reading app for the iPhone, it’s not free. It’s not expensive to purchase but if you don’t want to drop a few bucks on an iPhone app there are ‘free’ ways to get your comic fix.

Comic books in .cbr and .cbz format are just a bunch of images joined together. By changing the extension to .rar and .zip respectively, you can extract all the images into a folder. Then, you can view the comic using the iPhone’s built-in photo viewer. The problem with this is that the viewer automatically changes the image resolution during import. Most likely, the images will be blurred and difficult to read.

At present, the most viable option for a comic lover is to invest in a decent app to be able to view comics on the iPhone. However, an interesting point to note is that non-iPhone users would be at a disadvantage when it comes to comics on their respective phones. What do you think?

  • I just wanted to point out my new comic reader, Comic Reader Mobi for the iphone and Windows Mobile

It works by only zooming in on a subsection of the screen, allowing you to see the whole layout, but still clearly read the text. Check out the video here:

  • This is really cool.I want to upgrade to iPhone :)
  • The iPhone sure is showing the way for other mobile manufacturers, and it is only a matter of time before the others jump on this bandwagon too. It definitely heightens the appeal of the iPhone to its core demographic at present though
  • Why pay for an app like this. Just buy a comic!
  • That is the whole point, why buy a comic when you can get it on your iPhone without ever going anywhere near a comic shop.

Within 10 years we will control our lives with our smartphone or should that be the smartphone will control our lives?
  • For me, comics were always a bit special - I used to keep piles of them under my bed. Not the same electronically, they lose their magic.
  • I had a pile of comics under my bed too until the radiator burst and they got ruined.

They were special but I'd still have them if they were electronic (I wouldn't keep my iPhone under my bed before you ask!!!)
  • I'm not a big comics fan, but I think an app like this would be nice
