Top 4 Time Killers for the Iphone

Back in 2001 I used to lug portable DVD players for lang haul trips. A good movie compresses 5 dull hours into just 2. I considered them ultimate entertainment for circumstances that constrain any productivity or entertainment.

That player now gathers dust. So do other entertainment systems like the ipod or intel portable media center. They’re bulky and can’t quite stack up to the iphone. For me, the iphone with its thousands of apps is the final portable  entertainment system- one that even rivals the notebook when it comes to enjoyable time killing. And it makes voice calls too!

If you’re stuck on a road trip or waiting for a delayed business contact, pop up your iphone and load these apps. You’ll grin with delight and wished the trip took longer:

SIMCITY

It costs just $4.99 on the app store and is every bit as good as its PC counterpart. Sure, some features are missingsimcityip2( what do you expect on a small screen), but it runs fast. My iphone never crashed with this on and the business of building shopping malls and zoos  while waiting for my girlfriend at the loo makes me wish she took her time. The graphics are gorgeous; you can play for about 7 hours before the battery gives. If you’re an addict, bring your charger.

I Love Katamari

This game has you as an alien prince pushing around a sticky katamari ball on orders of the King. Paper clips andkatamariip ballpens add on to the ball which expands it in good time. Play the game long enough and you’ll be stacking up houses cars and trees. How’s that for mindless absurdity? I think the programmers could have extended the idea all the way to rolling in planets and blackholes. At $7, it’s good fun that doesn’t require much thinking.

Last.fm

Nokia phones had free radio since 2003; why not the iphone? Add this zero-cost app and you can search for tunes via title or author. That’s better than Nokia’s free radio since you control the music which you tailor to your moods. Last.fm works on other platforms too and it saves you from consuming memory card with space hogging mp3.

MobiTV

I’m a movie buff and have one of those MTRCB cards that lets me into movie houses for free. Now the iphone has an app that lets me experience live streaming movies over the carrier’s network. Be warned that you need 3G to fully enjoy the service. Edge or GSM networks don’t cut if. If you feed on the latter, ditch MobiTV and just burn some DVDs into the iPhone’s 8GB memory disk.

MobiTV is not just about movies; it has tons of live TV programs such as NBA games and even interactive stuff. Also it contains thousands of video channels or clips so you won't be able to burn them even if you have 80G - you have to stream them. If I am not wrong, it is not on iphone yet, but look out, it is coming.
  • This is a great list and good summary of the zillions of apps available. The SimCity game is too slow for me though - I get very annoyed with it very quickly
  • I was waiting for the iphone 3g. Then some expences came up, and I didn't get it at launch. Now reading all the reviews and talking to friends that own them, it looks like a pile of crap. The HTC diamond looks great (if it can get to the US). I'm on At&t.
  • Thanx Alot man
  • Awesome list! :)
  • I can't believe SIMCity is on the iPhone, I was addicted to that when I was at University, it nearly cost me my Degree, the only thing stopping me from buying it is that I am writing this post.
