What Mobile OS Should I Choose: Apple or Android?

View Comments May 29, 2009 | Everton

I’ve been using my Sony Ericsson X1 running Windows Mobile 6.1 since around October.  It’s a great corporate phone with fantastic Microsoft Exchange support, but once I leave the office I don’t use it and I really want a phone that has some cool apps, games and a good browser.

I’ve just received in the post this morning from Microsoft a HTC phone running a Windows 6.5 beta build (I’m not allowed to review it as it was supplied as part of my day job under NDA), which I’m going to play with over the next couple of months, but I really think I need to move to an Android or iPhone based phone.  Why?  Because these devices are where all the action is at, with thousands of developers churning out great applications.

I’m not sure though whether I should get a new iPhone or an Android phone.  I’m leaning towards an Android device because it is more open and because apps can run in the background.  Take for instance this great Spotify app for the Android Phone -- do you think Apple would let this go live on the iPhone?

I’m holding off making a decision though until I see the new iPhone which is launching shortly, and also when it becomes clearer what the specs are of the Android handsets coming out.  Google have stated that 20 are due within the next 12 months, but details are still really sketchy so I’m not sure if any sexy handsets are coming out.  I guess anything will be an improvement over the G1!

Are you an Android or an iPhone user?  Which one do you think I should get and why?  I’m particularly keen on any advice as to which upcoming Android phone I should get.

There are definitely a lot of choices for mobile phones today with even more on the way. I have developed and used many different phones and on different platforms. It all comes down to your requirements and then finding the OS and hardware that best supports your needs. If you are looking for a solution that will be around and is well supported then windows mobile wins hands down. The the launch of 6.5 recently and the announcement of the zune hd, I think you will see the type of apps and UI that you are seeking.
  • I would say the Wait for the Palm pre to come to the UK! That phone looks immence and is set for a June release in the States.
The new HTC looks pretty neat to (makers of G1) and looks like it will be fun to use. Saying that, the amount of games and applications the iPhone has is a really big draw.
  • I'd take an iPhone...

It is quite funny to read "Android or iPhone, because these are where the action is" while until today there are more applications being released for Windows Mobile than for both of these platforms.

Maybe your WM phone is a corporate phone and you are not allowed to install anything on it, and this is your problem. However, just look around and you will see a world of applications.

The problem with WM applications is still price, due to the shops that sell them, which take 70% to themselves and leave only 30% for developers. I hope this will change with the WM marketplace.

Regarding the iPhone, the previous post says it all: it is for kids.

Regarding ANDROID, it is a great OS, but it still lacks applications, and I believe this is what you want. Additionally, ANDROID is being built to be the WM parallel by Google, so emphasis on both OSs will be the same and in the future we will see good consumer and business phones from both.
  • I agree that WM make good phones and provide great Exchange support, but most of the apps for WM are not very interesting, useful or are geared towards business users.

The iPhone is where the action is.

The iPhone has the best apps, the most games (more than Nintendo DS and Sony Playstation Portable combined), the best browser, and the best and most active developers (more than 35,000 apps and growing).

With iPhone 3.0, the possibilities for applications have become huge. The iPod interface on the iPhone will be the standard for many hardware interface devices - allowing new types of applications and hardware uses that won't be available on other devices.

Of course, one can also get the iPod Touch if one doesn't want to get a new cell phone.

Ask your kid which OS would he or she choose. You'll get a simple answer: iPhone.
  • It's got to be the Android OS. I mean, it's made by Google, what else do you need?!
