BT Broadband have just announced that starting this summer it will be offering speeds of up to 20Mb to customers for free using ADSL2+ technology. They new speeds will be available to all new customers, and to existing customers if they sign up to a new 12 month contract.
BT Broadband are being squeaky clean about what speeds customers can get, advertising ‘up to 20Mb’ rather than ‘up to 24Mb’ like other providers, as they found in tests that only a handful of users could get the maximum 24Mb speed:
“Unlike other providers, BT is upgrading customers to 20Mb/s for free. High-speed broadband provides a faster and more reliable service that will transform the way we live, work, learn and play.” Gavin Patterson, BT Retail CEO
I think this is commendable as the results of my Broadband Speed Test clearly show that most users don’t get the speeds they are promised. This is one of the reasons I selected Virgin Media for my ISP, as I always get my full line speed and because I’m on the Virgin Media 50Mbps service, my service is truly unlimited.
