I had to check the date today to check it wasn’t 1st April when I saw the announcement from Digg for Digg Ads. This has got to be one of the worst thought out new ad programmes.
Digg Ads are displayed inline with comments on Digg, and the more times an ad is dugg, the less an advertiser will have to pay and the more times an ad is buried, the more an advertiser will have to pay. Below is a mockup of how the ads will appear:
I think it is admirable that Digg want to give users control over what ads appear, but all that’s going to happen is the bury brigade will bury each and every ad, especially when they are armed with the knowledge that this is costing the advertiser more. I guess the system could even out, with the least buried ads paying the lowest rates, rather than the most promoted ads!
