10 Simple Ways To Speed Up Windows 7

Disable Windows Aero

I’ve tried to avoid listing tweaks that make Windows 7 look ‘worse’, but Windows 7 Aero Theme can really task PCs, so disabling is advisable if you need that extra speed:

  • Right-click on your desktop and select ‘Personalise‘ and click the ‘Window Color‘ tab
  • Uncheck the ‘Enable Transparency’ box
  • Click on ‘Open classic appearance properties for more color options’
  • Choose a Standard or Basic theme from the popup that appears

Disable Services

Some windows 7 services take up a lot of unnecessary ram, which is particularly bad if you don’t use them.  Black Viper maintains a very good list of services that can be stopped.  Rather than disabling services, I recommend that you set services you don’t think you need to ‘manual’ just in case you make a mistkae.

To Start or Disable services:

  1. Go to Control Panel.   Click on ‘Administrative Tools‘ and then click on ‘Services’
  2. Right click on each individual service you want to tweak below.
  3. I recommend following the ‘Safe’ column:

“Windows 7 Aero Theme can really task PCs”
This is not true. Aero keeps the overhead of displaying visual data to the graphics processor instead of CPU. It actually reduces CPU usage and also removes the tearing effect when moving windows.
I only recommend disabling it if you have a slow graphics card.

Have the author truly tried these… tips?
A lot of them seems to be just hype or myths.
Disabling visual effects, for example, helps NOTHING in 99% of the cases.

Windows 7 only uses one core to boot out of the box. By increasing the number of cores used you can decrease the boot time
    <<

Thats simply NOT true. A quad core cpu does NOT have 4 unique processors but 4 cores on 1 processor. Setting the number of processors to 4 causes probably only problems.

And I really doubt that this "tweak" speeds up Windows 7.

    • Josh September 28, 2010 at 7:31 pm #

sorry but i have to say that was an idiodic solution. you messed up the operating system, so why couldn’t you just reinstall the operating system? im really for being so rude, but im just kinda ..shocked. next time, just hit ‘f12′ on bios- the first loading screen, pop in a cd, and use the arrow keys to select boot from cd/dvd and hit enter, it should be fairly straight forward from there. if that didnt work, then im sorry, or if u didnt have a dvd, sorry! but next time, think things through and get another cd or dvd maybe instead if that was the case.

oh and fyi people, yes this tweak DOES work for some reason, so if you were stupid enough to play with your operating system boot options, and you messed it up, then its only your fault.

Thanks for the useful tips, worth trying out!
Speaking of performance tweaks, I still don’t like the Win 7 default defragger! I thought they’d improved it after the debacle with Vista’s defragger, but the lack of a GUI, the slow speed and the fact that it *still* does not defrag all the fragments (analysis with other utilities shows many fragments remaining) is very disappointing.

whenever you disable services you should always keep a note of the original settings! then it’s easy to flip back if you change something you changed by mistake

        • Essentia July 23, 2009 at 6:53 pm #

I don’t bother disabling them in the first place (unless it’s problematic 3rd party services), since they really don’t consume any unnecessary resources at all.

From what I’ve seen, Windows 7 tweaks itself. Speaking from someone who is running it on three machines, all around the 1.5 to 1.8 Ghz single core range in cpu power, one with 1 Gig of Ram, one with 756MB of RAM and another with a whopping 512MB of RAM!

Windows 7 will run on things Vista would never dream of running on. All the systems run pretty well with the occasional 5 to 10 second pause that would be expected on the 512MB box…but hey…that’s well below the minimum that Microsoft says it needs to run.

Thanks for theese very usefull tricks, most of them are old, but they are still worth the shot if you are using and older system.

  24. Anonymous September 30, 2009 at 8:04 pm #

How you can say disabling visual effects makes no difference means you obviously don’t know how a computer works.Disabling visual effects will always speed up things unless your computer/card is so old it doesn’t support the effects in the first place.

  25. Manuel October 30, 2009 at 7:35 pm #

Although the look of Windows 7 may seem to be nothing more than some polish applied liberally to the Vista Aero theme, make no mistake: this is a full replacement operating system, and more than just “Vista done right.” From driver support to multitouch groundwork for the future, from better battery management to the most user-friendly interface Microsoft has ever had, Windows 7 is hardly half-baked

  26. Yatti420 November 15, 2009 at 6:15 am #

The configuring of msconfig>boot>advanced is a myth.. All your processors are used on start.. No change in boot times..

  27. Mike November 28, 2009 at 4:54 pm #

Kalkstein, Use Smart Defrag, just google it. Always do a Deep Optimize then Defrag again. It doesn’t only defrag, it rearranges ALL your software to easily accessible places by the head on your hard drive.

Ubuntu (GNOME) is extremely fast if you install Ubuntu, then Xfce-desktop (Xubuntu). If you are new to installing stuff in Ubuntu, go to Application> Accessories>Terminal and type in “sudo apt-get install” then the name of your program. Install gnome-panel, which xfce4-panel replaces, and gnome-session-daemon which xfce-session manager replaces. Result is Xfce speed with Gnome features.
    Credits to gnoshme.com for that.

GNOME/Xfce has that super-Mac feel, with amazing speed, but it is a little hard to get used to if you are a non-Mac user. Great for people that want speed or have old computers.
KDE is pretty fast with a super-Windows feel, but is very hard to get use to for a non-windows user, even then, it is kinda hard to get used to. Good for those people with 64bit computers with 3+ GBs of RAM.

  32. Doug Glass June 5, 2010 at 10:00 am #

Using msconfig to eliminate too many startup programs is not an especially good idea. Use autoruns. Don't know it? Search.

  33. Doug Glass June 5, 2010 at 10:02 am #

Before you start shutting down services, it would be a very good idea to investigate services interoperability. In other words, shutting down service A might, and in fact will, affect feature B.

I think it looks like a free application to tweak your windows having a built in tweak option from the OS itself but I'd say I haven't used the OS I'm quite used to xp so I don't have the time switching with another one.

This is excellent! You can get tools to do these for you, but it's good to see that someone's offering these explanations. Just to add, in my experience – registry optimizers, junk cleaners (ccleaner) also help maintain the speed.

most of these really don't speed up at all. personally if you want a faster windows seven there are other options i also would like to comment that disabling aero really makes no difference unless you are running a really old graphics card, and still its not like its going to speed up anything, i have tried the disabling of aero and there is no difference. if you are looking to speed up your computer i have seen results with my gaming using Cleamem, other than that get a better cpu, or a better graphics card in this instance

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

must say im sorry to those that the tweak for win7 to use all available processor core’s in my experience does work.. ok it dosent make my laptop boot in like 5 seconds or anything but ive noticed an improvement for sure..  same as all these tweaks, disabling services, and startup programs etc, its not a massive difference but it does lighten the load and help to make things a bit more responsive and snappier :)

hell if you want serious preformance power, go out and spend mega bucks on the fastest quad core on the market with the fastest ram, and the best motherboard and a water coolent system, then over clock the system and run it of a hardware striped volume raid…  then look for oil or do physics with it… not just check how smooth crysis will run a full settings lol

id say these tweaks suit the more experienced user thats happy to play around in windows where other users are usualy to scared to tread..   if a tweak works then great! if not either reverse it or fix it but dont moan about wrecking your system if your not sure about what your doing :) would you stick your head in a fire if the man told you too?
