How To Promote Your Site Without SEO

Say “web promotions” and what comes to mind? We line up the usual suspects. There’s search engine optimization.  Search engine marketing. Social media blitzing.  PR submissions. Oh, and everyone’s favorite but wouldn’t like to admit- black hat attacks.

Traditional webmarketing can be costly, particularly SEM whereby you bleed rivers per click. The more lucrative your industry, the higher the cost for SEM. I used to run forex promotions sites and it cost me $1000 a month to blitz on adwords. The opposite end of the spectrum consists of self help sites; these cost me only $100 a month to promote.

SEO, SEM, blackhat- these aren’t the only way to promote websites. The penny pinching webmaster can go offline to promote his products and services. Not only is this is sure to drive real traffic, it can provide lasting residual results and at sheerly lower costs. The following methods I’ve tried- and still use. They work and afford highly efficient means of attracting eyeballs.

  • Hand out Apparel Branded With Your URL. Imagine an army of teens raiding the malls wearing flashy neon shirts that sport lines like “Love my XXX bought at URL” or ” Only at XXX did I get Laid. Guess why?” You’ll not only pique the interest of passers by and generate visits, you’ll create brand recall! For low volume creation of such marketing device, check out cafepress.com  Over at this site, you can upload high resolution images and have these printed on hoodies, t-shirts, jackets and even pants. It will cost anywhere from $11 to $24 to purchase a set. Hand out the shirts for free to your friends or at an event and voila! You’ll have an army of walking billboards.  Maximize your advertising material by limiting the words to 5 (no one can memorize paragraphs), use  eye catching colors like neon red and associate high impact taglines to your url.
  • Let Your Cars Talk. I remember when Goldquest (a multilevel marketing firm selling gold coins at outrageous prices)   started operations in our location. Some members from  the firm drove their SUVs around town with large stickers on the rearview that screamed “Got Gold. Do you?” and  ”Im giving away gold!”  Now who wouldn’t be enticed to discover what that was all about. First thing I did when i got home was fire up my browser to satisfy my curiousity. Guess what? I ended up joining (and to this day I regret). Nonetheless the moral of the story is that teasers on automobiles bring real visitors!carsticker
  • The Classifieds Still Work. Folks tend to sneer at classified ads and print ads as being so 90s. Hey, it still works, especially if your one liner reaches out and grabs you by the balls. I attracted gigabytes of traffic when I posted an ad: CEO Openings for Fresh Grads to launch my new recruitment portal. The gambit sustained traffic in perpetua because the initial wave of visitors recommended it to friends long after I pulled  the classified.
  • Tap Opinion Leader Buzz Marketing. Sometimes all you need is the buzz.  A buzz turns into a roar of income when you spread the word of your service to opinion leaders in your community who in turn whisper it to friends at the next tupperware party. Think of it like gossip- but gossip that works for you and not against you. You don’t need opinion leaders like Oprah (but it helps). Just single out opinion leaders relevant to your service, and give them incentive to talk about your product. One way is to give them freebies at a party or event. After attendance, they’re sure to spread the word. All you’ll have to do is sit back and watch the eyeballs grace your site.

Are you ready to spread the word the ole fashioned way?
