LG-GD900 Review: Underneath It’s A Good Phone

LG UK very kindly supplied me with one of their latest handsets, the LG-GD900 Crystal to review. I haven’t been keeping up with the latest handset releases, so I was surprised when I opened the LG box and found inside a transparent phone. The LG-GD900 is a sliderphone where the bottom half of the slider is clear, which allows you to see through to the innards of the phone when the slider is up, and reveals a totally clear keypad when the slider is down.
LG claim that the GD900 Crystal is the first transparent phone, and I believe this to be true as the clear keypad plays no practical purpose, other than as something to show friends. It doesn’t appeal to me as I’m all about the features and not the looks, but I’m sure the clear keypad will appeal to the youth market.
That’s not to say that the LG-GD900 is lacking on the features side. The handset has a very good specification:
- HSDPA 7.2Mbps and Wi-fi
- 8MP Camera
- 3.0″ WVGA Screen
- Touch screen
- microsd slot
One feature which the phone sorely lacks is a 3.5mm headphone jack. For me this is a big black mark against the phone, particularly one aimed at the youth market who might not be able to afford an iphone. A set of headphones is included in the box, but I always prefer to use my own headphones with phones/mp3 players.
The GD900 also comes with LG’s S Class UI. I first saw this UI on the LG Arena and it still looks good now. It’s very fast and easy to use as shown in the video below:
My favourite feature with the LG-GD900 though is not actually anything to do with the phone, but what was inside the box. The LG-GD900 comes complete with a very sleek leather sleeve that not only holds the phone nice and snugly, but also makes it easy to wipe off smudges. Essential for touchscreen mobiles, and I wish I had something similar for my iPhone.
Overall, the handset is a nice addition to the large LG family and provides a nice spec for a budget handset. However, I just can’t see the clear keyboard attracting many customers.
