Brush With Google

I read two stories in the Metro newspaper last week that I saved to share with readers.

The first story covered the amazing story of artist Bill Guffey, who’s a bit short for cash so Bill uses Google Street View to find stunning locations around the world to paint.  Yes, rather than travelling to the locations he paints, he visits them on his PC!  Below are some of the art pieces that he’s sold for up to $2.5K:

“Having to look after my family and hold down a job have meant my travelling days are numbered”

Pidgeon Faster Than Broadband

The second interesting story was about a pigeon called Winston.  In a race to transfer 4GB of data between two offices 80Km apart, Winston arrived with his memory sticks in 2hr 6 min and 57 sec – when the rival download was only four per cent complete.  Winston’s trainers think he could do the journey in 45 minutes with practice.

I’m sure though that in a few years as broadband speeds continue to improve Winston will eventually lose, just like other forms of communication.  For instance on my 1.5Mbps upload I could deliver a 4GB file in 6 hours.  However, the superfast broadband network that BT is laying just down the road from me is capable of 10Mbps so a 4GB upload would only take 55 mins.
