Free Kaspersky… The fightback against MSE is on!

Earlier this week, Check Point software gave away free copies of ZoneAlarm Firewall Pro.  Now, on October 22nd (Thursday) you’ll be able to get a free copy of Kaspersky Internet Security normally worth $79.95.

Kaspersky isn’t the best anti-virus security package on the market, Avira currently sits at the top of the tree, but Kaspersky has always been very near the top.

Why are they doing this?  It’s because of Microsoft Security Essentials of course.  The other week Microsoft launched it’s free anti-virus product and, frankly, it’s doing rather well.  It’s been reported that over 2.5 million people have downloaded it in the first two weeks and that it’s detected a great many trojans and viruses on installed machines, about half a million in fact, that other anti-virus packages missed.

Then there are the companies plying their paid-for products and not giving away freebies.  PC Tools have just launched their 2010 suite and the list goes on.

There can be no doubt that the launch of Microsoft Security Essentials is shaking things up a bit and has anti-virus vendors worried.  Despite the disaster that was OneCare, where Microsoft bought up a perfectly good anti-virus package and then ruined it, MSE is based on their own award-winning corporate security package.  It’s really rather good.

So should you just use MSE or go for one of the other suites?  It depends on what type of user you are.  There can be no doubt that the holistic approach offered by the suites is a boon for the majority of users.  Having one package that has anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall protection all built in makes life considerably easier.

If you’re the sort of Windows user who’s used to running several packages side-by-side, and you remember to keep them all updated, then MSE could be the way to go.

I trialed the kaspersky beta for win 7 and it was scuse the french bloody awful. It consistently locked up, as soon as I installed panda it was fine. I use kaspersky total space on my domain and wished to retain it for ease of management but big let down for win 7 beta. Panda has been fine but tempted to check out microsoft's free version. is it any good?
