If you live in the UK there’s a new tool you might want to take a look at. Top10Broadband have released a new Streetstats tool to show you how fast the broadband speeds are in your neighbourhood, or the one you plan on moving to.
It works by recording the postcodes of everyone who does a speed test on the site, and it works very well indeed. They link in with Google Maps to provide street-level views with pop out tags showing you not only the broadband speeds of people near you, but also which ISP they’re getting that speed with.
There are quite a few websites in the UK that say they’ll help you find the best broadband, but this is usually just down to price and additional bundles like phone and TV. I think a tool such as this is far more useful in determining the best ISP to move to.
This is because of LLU, local loop unbundling, where the ISP is allowed by British Telecom to fit it’s own kit into the local exchange. This can make a significant difference to available speeds between people even in the same street.
I urge you to check this website out as, the more people who use it, the more useful it will become. You can find it here.
