Apple Updates iTunes To Ensure Incompatibility With Palm Pre-Smart Phones

The cell phone industry is a fast developing one and technology changes at break neck pace here. Ever since its inception a few years back, Apple’s iPhone captured a considerable part of the high end cell phone segment. It brought the touch screen revolution in the smart phone market and companies like RIM and Palm followed suit with their incarnations of touch screen enabled high end smart phones. The launch of Palm Pre has posed a challenge to the iPhone 3GS and Apple is gearing up to counter the competition.

When Palm started advertising for the Pre earlier this year it highlighted that the device can sync to iTunes, which is a music playback software owned by Apple. Apple was quick to retaliate and said that iTunes won’t support third party music devices. The recent update to iTunes is meant to thwart the syncing capabilities of Pre with the software.

However, Palm is not likely to give up so easily. After all, it has put a lot of effort and thought in designing the Pre which is being touted as its flagship product. As of now Apple has edged ahead in the battle. The Pre users who upgrade to iTunes newest version 9.02 will not be able to sync their phone with the software. This is a setback to Palm as it managed to re enable iTunes support for its OS barely a month back. To manage a workaround Palm is said to have approached the USB-IF. It alleged that Apple deviated from USB-IF’s membership technology but the forum has given its verdict in favor of Apple.

  • May be it will be a setback for them But I do believe that Apple should support third party device else in future no compatibility with the other device will make apple in trouble.
