It seems that Verizon is going out of its way to zoom ahead of the iPhone with its arsenal of Android based smart phones. After creating a wave in the market with its sensational Droid commercial mocking Apple’s iPhone and following it up with a brilliant stealth commercial, Verizon is trying to add more features to the Droid. Recently, a Verizon Wireless spokesperson said that the Droid will sport data tethering in the next year.
This is welcome news for the growing Droid lover’s community who cannot wait to get their hands on the sleek device. The Droid is already a solid multimedia heavy phone that focuses on Multitasking and seamless connectivity. As Verizon has pointed out in the aforesaid ad, the Droid can perform many tasks that the iPhone cannot. Data tethering support is likely to strengthen its position in the fast emerging smart phone market. What this means is that Verizon Wireless users will be able to use the device for connecting to Verizon’s popular 3G EV-DO network using their laptops.
The arch rival of Droid, iPhone does not support data tethering as of now. AT &T which offers network coverage for iPhone in USA has said that this feature will be offered on iPhone in future. But they have failed to specify a time for that. However, AT&T offers tethering on the other smart phones available. Verizon also has data tethering on some of its smart phones but it has named the service as Mobile Broadband Connect. It has varying rentals for the users of different profiles.
