Went rock climbing with your notebook in tow? Chances are it didn’t survive. But don’t fret. GammaTech’s
Durabook D14RM is the solution for craggy explorers of craggy outdoors. It’s a portable note clad in black magnesium-alloy case and sporting black rubberized corners. It not only looks tougher than your average bouncer, it will survive aggressive manhandling… even a kick to the balls.
GammaTech forged a notebook according to MIL-STD-810F guidelines for ruggedness. So what’s a fella like me to do? First, I swiped the D14RM from the mantel as the machine executed Photoshop. Then I kicked it onto a marble floor -thrice. It was nice to see it bounce! And since it glared at me with imperiousness, the sucker got a full 16-ounce venti-sized Mocha Frappe splashed across its rubbery keys.
The monster D14RM didn’t falter whatsoever. It’s internal structure and external aesthetics withstood the beating without any apparent damage to its structure or functionality. That’s despite the D14RM utilizing a spinning hard drive. True, an SSD would make more sense as solid states can withstand mach 1 impacts- but that may just triple the price.
The D14RM provides a workhorse of amazing grunt… with bits that can grapple AutoCAD 2009 with ease. Within this beast is a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of DDR2/800, a 320GB 5,400rpm hard drive, integrated graphics, and Windows Vista Business 64-bit . Despite that, my benchmarks revealed that it performed more like a 2.6Ghz Core Duo. Hmmmm could it be a motherboard with glass balls? That notwithstanding, it’s worth the price. Particularly if you plan to hit the swiss alps anytime soon.
Ready for the extreme?
