It’s practically 2012. We all know what means. Apocalypse. Mayan Prophecy. Volcanoes. Quakes. And…. EEE 802.11ac. Yep. the IEEE group decided that if we’re hurtling towards the end, we may as well do it in speed. So why not have really fast wifi so the end can be broadcast at up to date intervals?
As with the wireless N specification, new standard will continue to work on the 5.0Ghz band, but will provide larger channels for data throughput. While current technology deploys 20Mhz-wide channels, 802.11ac will be using either 40Mhz or 80Mhz-wide (and maybe 160Mhz) channels to deliver data. Think of it as adding a massively large funnel to the ends of stout pipes. Your data comes in faster, smoother, and without conflict despite how many boys are logged on.
According to what I’ve read, the specification can work with existing PCs and systems. Simply plug in a compliant dongle, connect to an 802. 11ac router and you’re blazing away on the information highway.
Right now the technology is still being pulled in many directions as standards are being hammered out. I have no doubt, however, that we’ll see it even before 2012. Just in time to live stream the eruption of a volcano between the White House.
