Vodafone UK Selling iPhone From 14 January

View Comments December 21, 2009 | Robert Boland

Consumers in the UK are finally starting to get a larger choice of networks which the iPhone is available on. After O2′s exclusivity with the iPhone ran out in November, Orange was the next carrier of iPhone. It was also announced the Vodafone and Tesco would be getting the iPhone on it’s network.iphone3gs 600 200x90 Vodafone UK Selling iPhone From 14 January

Well now Vodafone has announced that the 14 of January will be the date the iPhone becomes available on the Vodafone network.

Guy Laurence, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said that the company had been preparing its network for over a year to handle the introduction of the iPhone.

The cheapest tariff available is £30 a month for 24 months, plus additional handset charges ranging from £59 (iPhone 3G 8GB) to £239 (3GS 32GB). A 1GB data allowance is included, compared to Oranges 750mb. Vodafone and O2 both offer unlimited wifi use. Orange’s data limit includes connections to the internet via BT Open-Zone wifi. You also get unlimited Vodafone to Vodafone Calls with all packages as well as unlimited texts to all networks.

Orange and O2′s lowest tariffs are £29.36 and £34.26 respectively, and include a free iPhone 3G on a 24 month contract, but you’ll be forking out between £125 and £184.50 for a iPhone 3GS 16G depending on the length of your contract. It’s £149 for a iPhone 3GS 16GB on Vodafone’s cheapest 24 month contract of £30. Vodafone has also introduced a charge for customers wishing to use their iPhones as a modem – starting at £5 to download 500 MB.

Tesco Mobile tariffs are the cheapest and start at £20 a month for 12 months – with a pricey £222 charge for the iPhone 3G. However, Tesco says that the shorter contract will enable customers to upgrade more quickly.

Since the rise of the iPhone and increased popularity of smartphone devices, there are growing concerns that mobile networks globally are struggling to cope with demand as more consumers choose internet-enabled smartphones and mobile dongles over fixed broadband deals.

So there’s not really a whole lot between the different packages, but at least there is plenty of options to choose from and I’m sure everyone will find a package that suits them.

What do you think of the price plans offered or the iPhone?

  • Good news that Vodafone have come into the market; they will help drive down the monthly cost of mobile contracts. Good job.
The Tesco iphone has got to be a good deal for customers but what does it do to the Apple brand? It is a personal thing but I think it cheapens Apple. You won't catch Apple selling discounted or cheap macs in any store let alone a non-branded Apple store of franchised store.
  • this is when the competition will really start on the i phone
