3 Things To Leave Behind

As we rapidly approach the eve of the new year, it is time to look back upon the past year and… say “thank God that’s over!”

We have of course had a lot of great moments in 2009 and there are surely a lot of things we have enjoyed but there are always somethings that we’d rather not repeated in the future. So here’s my top three things that I would like to leave behind this year. Feel free to add your own peeves as comments below.

3. Data Limits (Mobile)

Well, I know about the risks of unlimited data and all but this techie yearns to surf all that he wants and not be tied down by an artificial ceiling. Okay, so many 50GB per month is kinda pushing it but at least there’s that whilst folks are wired. You go mobile and suddenly you are tied down by limited data.

Isn’t it enough that mobile broadband simply isn’t as fast as it can be that we must be throttled in our data habits? And it’s not like we are stealing or anything, it is just about Spotify and YouTube and all. So next year, let’s have more data, less limits. In fact, less limits on many other things. More happy hours, for example, but that belongs to another blog.

2. ‘Me Too’ Gadgets

This is something I really hate as a tech lover, blogger and addict. There are always these gadgets that are announced in advance as grand new things, only to turn out to be gadgets trying their best to mimic the best in the field.

This has been a disturbingly common thing in the mobile phone industry of late because of Apple’s game changing device — the iPhone. There have been just so many companies that put absolutely no thought into it and dished out model after excruciating model with touchscreen and touch UIs. Of course, sophistication does not come on a mere whim. It takes cultivation and refinement.

Thankfully, the phone makers have gradually caught up, gotten up to speeds with the current market trends and released halfway decent models and some really good ones. And the next just promises to be a dazzler in terms of new gadgets. I guess every decade needs to start off with a bang and we shall have many of them in 2010.

So please, be innovative and do not try so hard to scream ‘me too’. UI’s hacked together in months and hardware pumped with steroids does not a good user experience make. Same goes for copycats actually — if you are too lazy to make your own thing, stop pushing copied gadgets to buyers!

1. Delicious Rumors Of Certain Things

You have to admit, this year has been a year that has been full of rumors that promise sinfully ecstatic things like the Apple Tablet, the Google Phone and SnapDragon Android phones. There’s more of course, like the Gulftown Mac Pros with temporary exclusivity, the Google netbook, color eBook readers with video capabilities. Okay, so that last one isn’t a rumor. It is a confirmed project that is still in the labs and will probably be till 2012.

These are the kind of gadgets that gadget-geek wet dreams are made of! And the rumors make them sound so very tempting! Sure there is a lot of… imaginative pieces being written all around the web (I might be guilty for a few of them) but from the all the rumors and leaked information they seem to be quite the real things. That makes things even more equipped to keep us on the edge of our seats.

These days, you don’t need to catch whodunnits to get your thrills if you are a gadget geek. The industry keeps you in enough suspense and drama as it is!

My point on this one is simple — enough with the rumors already, let’s have the real deal! Thankfully, this one wish of mine is easily fulfilled because most of these things are predicted to be happening over various points in 2010.
