Nevermind the naysayers, the age of the tablet is almost upon us. It the gadget that will rule the 10s till the next generation comes in with the 3D things projected in thin air type futuristic technology. But with so many gadgets already a part of your daily routine, why do you even need this new fangled line of devices? Well, the short way to put it is this — a properly baked tablet will likely replace quite a few gadgets in life will also fill in the gaps that have always been there.

Let’s start with the replacement part. Even though modern phone like the iPhone, Droid, etc. are perfectly capable of doing most of your on-the-go things, their size is their main limiting factor. Somethings just need a bigger screen, like reading books. So we carry around eBook readers. Another thing that works out well on larger screens are movies. Even though phones are getting larger and larger touchscreens, they do have to hedge around the 4” mark to remain pocketable.
We also carry around netbooks because we feel that we need them for on-the-go surfing and miscellaneous computing needs like doing light word processing, reading mail, playing light games, using web apps, etc. Again, our phones can do this but not as well as netbooks can, thanks to a much bigger screen and some more horsepower.
However, we don’t really like carrying netbooks around. Sure they are a welcome break from back breaking and the not so sleek laptops but they are still slightly cumbersome and aren’t always worth it in terms of the compromise that we have to make on the power. So over all, we use netbooks only because we have to. As for eBook readers — wouldn’t you much rather have something that did more than just one thing? The sluggish screen, the lack of color and the complete and utter lack of any other function makes the eBook reader a prime target for a hostile takeover by a new line of gadgets.

And tablets are looking to do just that. With a few product cycles, tablets are expected to easily better the eBooks of the world in terms of readability under direct sunlight and longevity and they will be readily better than the netbooks when they come out this year. I am of course talking about the tablets that are worth talking about. Some are just n00b attempts at making a next generation device.
But tablets will do much more that. They will fill in that gap that we have so far been unable to fulfill with the available devices. We have always felt the need for a portable device that is larger than a phone, less cumbersome than a netbook, as long lasting as an eBook reader and as simple use as an iPhone with as much functionality to match. The tablet is going to be all that. And by being that, it will become your active companion in your drawing room, kitchen, train compartment and bus seat. In other words, it will be that one device that you can take everywhere with you because it stays relevant everywhere.

The built-in 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, camera, EDGE, HDMI out, USB, SD card expansion slot, etc will meant that it has every bit of goodness that you want from a device. And its touchscreen will mean that you can interact with it much more freely. It won’t replace a powerful laptop or desktop (yet) when it comes to serious work, but it will replace every other device in your arsenal, except perhaps the phone.
The specs mentioned above are already popping up together in upcoming tablets. One good example would be Notion Ink’s Adam (India). So if you are still in doubt, just keep your eyes open through the next few months. They promise to be brimming with tablet news.
