The results are in for the month of March for browser market share. These should be interesting since the Windows browser ballot screen went live at the beginning of the month and only after a few weeks several of the browser companies reported an increase in their market share. NetApplications as usual have got the official results in for us, the company monitors and analyzes browser usage on a large network of Web sites.
First off the clear winner for the month appears to be Google Chrome, which now has almost a quarter of the market share that Firefox holds for the month of March. Chrome had the biggest jump in market share out of all the browsers for the month.
It increased from 5.6 percent to 6.1 percent during the period of February to March, an increase of half a percent. Mozilla Firefox also saw an increase from 24.2 percent to 24.5 percent and even safari moved up from 4.5 percent to 4.7 percent.
Interestingly, Opera were dead in the water and didn’t seem to move at all from their 2.4 percent of the market. This contradicts earlier reports by them claiming that they had seen an 85% increase in the number of downloads since the release of the browser ballot screen. They also said that they were seeing 46% of these downloads coming directly from the browser ballot screen itself. It will be interesting to see if they can come up with a plausible answer to these stagnant figures.
Old faithful, Internet Explorer is continuing its decline and now holds 60.7 percent of the market after dropping from 61.6 percent. However it’s still the leader by far but it has had its market share eaten into over the last few months and the implementation of the browser ballot screen will not do it any favours.
