Nokia Sues Apple Over iPad and iPhone Infringements

Nokia don’t seem to get on too well with Apple these days, perhaps it’s because they are two of the worlds leading mobile manufacturers in stiff competition with each other, or maybe it’s something more sinister.

Whatever it is, it’s leading to a whole load of patent infringement claims. Nokia has just announced that it has sued Apple in the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, claiming that not only the iPad 3G, but also the iPhone violate five patents held by Nokia.195830 apple antitrust original Nokia Sues Apple Over iPad and iPhone Infringements

Nokia said in a statement;

“The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices,”

Of course this isn’t the first time both the companies have fired patent infringement claims at each other, Nokia started it off last year which involved GSM, UMTS, and Wi-Fi standards. Then Apple rebounded back with a countersuit of their own. None of these have been settled to date and it seems the companies are quite content to just keep filling patent infringements one after the other.

However this recent one filed by Nokia could really mess up Apple if they win their case. Positioning data has become a central feature in many applications, needed for things like navigation and other location based features. In fact most new applications rely on positioning data these days.

But honestly, I just wish these companies would stop spending so much time trying to sue each other and get on with researching and developing their products instead.
