Like most of you, I know that the success of the iPad is because of the Apps and the small size. I have written about the demise of the PC for personal use, with it being replaced by the smaller and affordable iPad tablet. Let me reiterate, the PC as a commercial and business device will continue to exist for a long time. However, as a home device for personal uses, the iPad will do just as well.
As more proof of this finding, consider that there are now 10,000 apps available on the iPad. What is even more remarkable is the fact that it took only two months to reach this milestone. When the Apple store opened in 2008, it took almost five months to reach the 10,000 sales plateau.
What is making this such a success? Certainly it is not just the APPS. There were many applications that were being designed for the iPad that had a brother or cousin on the PC side. So what changed?
The environment: function
Computer manufacturers have been toying with making their PC ‘s smaller and smaller and less expensive. There are laptops, and netbooks that are almost as inexpensive as the iPad. However, they do not sell as well. So that is not enough. What else is making the sales march like they are?
Art: form
The Apps are making a difference, because there are very specific Apps that will do only one thing. Moreover, they are very adept at doing just that one thing. Plus they are relatively inexpensive. 78% of the Apps available are paid applications. The average price of these are for $4.67, that is just under a dollar more for the iPhone Apps, at $3.87.
The combination of form and function working so closely together has made a difference in the success of the iPad. A small size alone did not do it. Likewise, just having apps did not do it either. However, being together at the same time has made a difference.
