Is The iPod Touch Becoming Too Like The iPhone?

Since the iPod Touch was released back in September 2007, it’s come a long way. Not only was it a big leap forward for Apple, it was a big leap forward for the whole world. Nothing out there could compete with it, it was in a league of it’s own. We’d never seen anything so sleak, shiny and beautiful which had just one button and a touchscreen that worked.

We could browse the web with this little device, watch Youtube videos and check our emails. Then it began to evolve rapidly. The 2.0 update brought maps, weather, stocks and the much acclaimed App Store. The App Store has paved the way to Apple’s success to date. Yes the iPod Touch is great without it, but it’s so much better with it. The thing is, the iPhone has all these features too, and more. Why not just buy an iPhone instead and save yourself from having to carry around two devices all the time?

Currently there are some features which are very separate between the iPhone 4 and current iPod Touch. The iPhone 4 has a camera, a front facing camera, facetime, hd video recording, faster processor, retina display and a gyroscope, not to mention it’s unique design. But these features won’t be unique to it for much longer.

At last years music event, we expected Apple to release an iPod Touch with a camera, but it was scraped at the last minute due to manufacturing difficulties. So this year it looks like a camera is definitely on the cards. and Reports are already coming in claiming that the iPod Touch will in fact have a 5 megapixel camera, facetime, hd video recording and a gyroscope.

Sounding a lot like the iPhone 4. We can also take it as a given that there will be a faster processor and the iPod Touch’s design hasn’t been updated in a while, so that’s probably on the cards too. As for the retina display, that may well find its way in too.

If all this turns out to be true, the only difference between the iPhone 4 and next gen iPod Touch that I can think about is GPS and the phone bit. You can do everything on an iPod Touch that you can on an iPhone except making and receiving calls and texts and accessing the web outside of a wi-fi connection.

There is too many similarities between the next iPod Touch and iPhone 4, why would you buy an iPod Touch over an iPhone 4? The iPod Touch is a little thinner I guess, and it has a larger memory capacity but after that, the iPhone 4 has everything else. Maybe you’d go for the iPod Touch because it’s cheaper? but not by much.

The iPod Touch and iPhone are beginning to merge together and it’s no surprise that iPod Touch sales are decreasing, I think Apple should be trying to distinguish them more and sell them as too separate devices, with separate features.
