Guinness Announces The Top Video Game Characters Of All Time

The Guinness Book of World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition has recently come out, and it includes a list of the 50 best video game characters of all time. Now firstly, who decided on this list? Well the results were determined by a poll on the Guinness website. So readers and fans determined the results of the poll. Over 13,000 different votes were counted so it’s a pretty conclusive result in my opinion.

Want to hazard a guess as to who got the number one spot? Well I don’t think it’s any surprise really, Nintendo’s Mario of course claimed the top spot. This iconic little guy first appeared back in 1981 and the Mario franchise has blossomed ever since.

Link from Zelda was another one for Nintendo with him coming in second place. Master chief from Halo claimed the 3rd spot for Microsoft and Sony’s Solid Snake coming in 4th. I think you’ll find that the majority of the top 10 are held by older characters from the classic games with the exception of one or two.

Looking further down the list you see characters such as “Soap” MacTavish from the Call Of Duty Franchise as well as others.  Most of these characters have been around longer than I have and I’ve never heard of several of them, but somebody must have if they managed to make it into the top 50 characters of all time

Have a look at the list below and let us know what your list is in the comments below

haha “37. Ash Ketchum (Pokemon Red/Green, Nintendo, 1996)” isn’t even a video game character! (well only in spinoffs, but was never in red/green)

So many rubbish characters have made it in. All the CoD lot don’t deserve their places in there… They’re barely characters, just people that stuff happens to. Also: The Prince, from prince of persia, is hellishly dull. Princess Peach is just someone who gets kidnapped over and over again, and should probably be more careful about personal security.
A good character is someone you identify with, someone who’s emotions you get immersed in while you’re playing the game. Ezio Auditore da Firenze is an epic example, as is whichever of the guys in GoW2 has lost his wife.
NOT Ghost from CoD, who’s obviously only in there because a million gimpy CoD fanboys went “Ohhh but he’s got a reaaally coool maaaassskk.”

Also, why the hell is the “Cole Train” in there, and the Marine from the DOOM games isn’t?!!
And why is Max Payne, a character with massive amounts of depth and an ENORMOUS backstory, number 42?! After the aforementioned Ghost from CoD?!
Jesus H. Christ, the paddle from Pong is more interesting than Ghost.

Also, no mention of Vito Scaletta from Mafia 2. He’s amazing. No Jo Dark, of Perfect Dark fame.
Frankly, this list is the biggest bunch of badly considered bull I’ve ever seen.
No Commander Shepard (Mass Effect 1&2), or John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)…
I could keep going on all damn day about characters who are more deserving of a place in this list than many that are in there, unless this is entirely based on the sales of those games. Which it can’t be.
Was this just put together by someone with only the most basic knowledge of videogames over the years? Looks like.
