Want a simple place to upload these same documents to allow for easy embedding? Well, WoBook is the place to go.

WoBook is another in a long line of content distribution networks, that allows for easy upload of Docs, Spreadsheets, Powerpoint and PDF files that you can easily embed within your website or blog, but also pay to have it even more distributed across the globe, on the internet.

Once uploaded, the file is converted into flash, which makes load times incredibly fast, and somewhat easier to read. After you embed any of your files, you can pull statistics from your account, to see how often each one of these files is being read, and who is reading them.

If you don’t have any content to upload, you can also sign-up for account and stash a library of files for later reading. It’s new and very innovative way of getting the word out on your latest article, book or catalog.

Check it out: WoBook

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

One of the amazing things being accomplished with today’s technology, is an incredible amount of photo manipulation software. Whether it be through photo editing, conversion tools or the endless amount of photo galleries, digital cameras have taken this world by storm, and has made everyone a photographer. Everyday, it something new with photography…and today it has been no different.

Today, I ran across an amazing new web application, called TiltShiftMaker. What this app does, is something you could have never imagined. It is taking any single photograph, and converting into what looks like a miniature model. To get a better idea for what I’m talking about, please click here to sample images.

Just like many of it’s photography manipulators, Tilt Shift Maker is a free product for those of you looking to have some fun with your photos. It’s obvious, more then anything, that most of images are tricking the mind into seeing these images in a completely different, but incredibly fun way.

So, if you are looking to kill some free time, and you have plenty of city or landscape photographs, you really can have some fun with this awesome web product. Check it out: TiltShiftMaker

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

I originally wrote about an awesome Web 2.0 directory back in 2006 called GoWeb20. It essentially gave you just about every new and up and coming Web 2.0 site that the world was to behold. I’ve recently become increasingly annoyed with the site, as it has become extremely bloated and almost brings my machine to a halt at times.

So, I decided to look elsewhere for some alternatives for finding many of the Web 2.0 sites out there. It wasn’t hard to find many, but I was looking specifically for directories, not business like sites, like TechCrunch. Here are three of the ‘big’ ones I found:

KillerStartups
Killer Startups is specifically designed towards startup companies. They review 15 new companies per day and rank them according to votes, similar to Digg. It’s a great place to find brand new sites, not necessarily ones that have been around for a while.

Listio
Listio is a simple Web 2.0 directory. They give quick snippets of what each of these sites are, and then displays similar projects down below. It can be quite addictive browsing through the dozens of related web applications that exist out on the www.

NetWebApp
NetWebApp is very similar to Listio, in that it displays web applications in directory form, but it organizes them by category. You can simply select what area of web apps you are looking for.

Directory sites such as these come in handy when you are looking for something new to sign up for, or simply something new to write about on your blog.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

One of the most annoying parts of social network sites, such as Delicious, Digg and Reddit, are their ability to take down many sites or blogs on a moments notice. The sudden rush of traffic to a site, can bring it to it’s knees and take it down for an indefinite amount of time.

There are typically mirrors you can use, such as Google Cache, but it’s typically not quite the same as the actual site. Fortunately Mr. Uptime can notify you, as to when a site has been brought back to life and up and running as normal.

Mr. Uptime is a simple Firefox Extension, that continuously works in the background of your browser, attempting to access, inaccessible websites and automatically connecting to them, when they have been re-established.

You can setup several different sites, and even have a new tab or page open, as soon as the site comes back online. As technology progresses forward, there may not be a need for an application such as this. But presently, there still is a definite need.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

As 2008 is coming to a close, we look back and should be proud of what we witnessed. In the end, I think it was once again the year of the cell phone, particularly the iPhone. With the release of their 3G phone, GPS and their App Store, the iPhone took the Blue Ribbon by far, with Google’ Android phone taking a distant 2nd place. We saw the takeoff of electric cars from Tesla, we saw Facebook taking the forefront in Social communication and we saw thousands more Web 2.0 websites hitting the dance floor.

I am only naming a few for 2008, because the real subject of my post is 2009. What are some of things we have to look forward to in 2009? Here are the Top 3 on my radar…

1. Where will the iPhone go next?…and What will the competitors bring?
There is no doubt that the iPhone is well on it’s way to becoming easily the most popular smart phone on the planet. It’s ease of use, it’s feature rich environment, it’s Microsoft Exchange sync ability, and it’s incredible internet speeds, are making it the must have phone of 2009. Competitors such as the Blackberry Storm and Google G1 have hit the shelves with lukewarm reviews. From all indications, they aren’t that much closer to the iPhone, as they are to a lame Windows Mobile phone. Of course the Nokia fanboys will probably argue, but I honestly think the App Store is the real killer here.

2009 will see the iPhone bring turn-by-turn directions, a larger landscape of 3G coverage, possibly 50,000 more apps and hopefully somehow, much longer battery life. Some expect a completely new phone to come out in 2009, but most do not. We’ll likely see several different firmware releases over the course of the year, with many additional feature rich capabilities.

We will continue to see lackluster competitors show up in 2009. Google release their second version of Android, more providers will continue to pick-up their cellular phone operating system, but they still won’t come close to the iPhone. The marketing, the look, the ease of use and the coverage will take the iPhone above and beyond its competitors. Unless Apple completely screws it up with one of their firmware releases, I don’t see it faltering, anytime soon.

Long live the iPhone…

2. More streaming/VOD movies
The fact is, with the release of Netflix streaming capable devices, it won’t be long before there are many online streaming competitors that release many different pieces of hardware with Blu-Ray and DVD capability as well. We are already seeing it with the XBOX 360 and Roku Player, and it won’t be long before the PS3 has the same. I think at some point in the next five years, we may see ALL movies in streaming form. This will be the only fool proof way of protecting DVD piracy. We will continue to see boot-legged feature films from the theater, but those will never have the affect that DVD pirates, overseas and otherwise have on the industry.

I may be completely off on that, but there is no doubt that streaming movies are well on their way to becoming the best way of watching films.

3. HDTV slowly becomes SDTV
With the kill of over the air broadcast analog television in February 2009. Our definition of standard definition television is slowly becoming the black-and-white television of old. Soon we will begin to see all forms of television communication in high definition form. Commercials, news, cartoons, and of course sports will ALL be available in HDTV. High Definition will become our present day definition of Standard definition, and we’ll vomit at the look of ‘old school’ television. Of course, the old version will still be readily available in all forms, due to lack of capability with older TVs, but I foresee every arena having some type of HD available in 2009.

Long Shot Honorable Mentions
The Death of Blu-Ray – Five Reasons why I think Blu-Ray is dieing
-The cost of the players
-The cost of the movies.
-The non-savy movie watcher, who just doesn’t understand the difference.
-Streaming HD
-The picture difference between a standard DVD and Blu-Ray, is almost inconceivable.

I know it’s a small list, and I know a lot doesn’t regard the web, but these are three big items I foresee being huge topics in 2009.

What are yours?

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

One of the most popular methods of finding random websites, is StumbleUpon. You simply install a small toolbar that adds on to Firefox or IE, and you simply click ‘Stumble’ to find your next great website. The service is so popular, that Ebay decided to acquire them in 2007 for $75 Million. We are still awaiting what exactly are going to do with the service, but they do own the property now.

Well, I’m not here to talk about Stumble, but I am here to talk about a similar but much more interactive product called SocialBrowse. SocialBrowse really looks like a combination of StumbleUpon and Digg upon first glance. However, it’s really something completely different. With a small Firefox Add-on, you browse the web and share whatever links you find interesting. You then comment and share your perspective for the next ‘socialbrowser’ to discover.

As you can see above, SocialBrowse has a much interactive and feature rich browsing aspect, as compared to StumbleUpon. You have your continuously running social friend feed on the left, and then links that have been reviewed are displayed with a SocialBrowse symbol in your browser window.

I think it’s still in it’s infancy, and on its way up. Check it out, before it gets hot: SocialBrowse.com

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

Within the past couple of weeks, I finally sold out and purchased my first product from Apple. And why would I go with anything else besides the iPhone. The previous month or so I was doing research on MP3 players that all had these features, but they were all on separate devices. Features, such as Wi-Fi, touch screen capabilities, GPS, web access, and of course e-mail. I still am finding it amazing the amount of features this slick thing can be.

In the beginning, the G1 iPhone, I was in awe at what it could do, but I wasn’t sold on it. It didn’t have much more then any other smart phone, not to mention slow Edge speeds and no GPS. So, this past summer when the G2/3G iPhone came out, with all of this and the release of the app store, I was sold. So sold, that I even bought out of my Verizon contract and moved over to At&t.

The App store from Apple, simply amazes me with some of the products they are releasing. Whether it be for managing your Netlix account, tracking you shopping lists, GPS based pedometers and of course lots and lots of games. There are also a few recommended apps for us bloggers out there. For either running your blogs on a daily basis, coming up with creative stories or communicating to your readers. I have come up with five great and free apps.

iPhone WordPress

Exactly as the title states, it’s WordPress on your iPhone

Write Posts

Upload Photos

Edit current archived posts

Session saving, so phone calls don’t interrupt posts

Supported by WordPress 2.5.1 and above.

Here’s a great video tour from WordPress:

iPhone TypePad

An amazing application for TypePad/iPhone users.

A simple, dedicated photo blogging site for your iPhone.

Share personal and public photos.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

So, we know that there are plenty of options out there for creating PDFs. Many include a PDF virtual printer, that sits in your Windows printer folder and generates the compressed, secure PDF file on your desktop. Most are incredibly simple, and most come at an incredibly reduced cost, as compared to Adobe Acrobat.

Well, CloudPrint, from our friends at HP, take it one step further. First off, they have made it online, and second, they done so with several different ways of getting them created. Read on…

Cloudprint still installs a virtual printer on your PC, but once you print these files, it automatically stores them online for safe keeping. Once you send your file to this PDF printer, you will be asked what your cellular number is, so that they may contact you via SMS, when the file has been created.

Along with the simple, ‘Print to the web’ option, you also have the following:

An unlimited number of print jobs can be stored online.

Convert webpages to PDF, by simply sending the URL to +4477814 88791

Convert webpages to PDF through your e-mail account.

Here is a quick video tour of CloudPrinter:

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

Air has become one of the most innovative applications that Adobe has come up with, in the past couple of years, and it continues to grow on a daily basis. It’s incredible capability of bringing online data to your desktop, with ease of construction and what is usually an awesome GUI, has taken the web by storm.

Another reason for it’s popularity, is its compatibility across all platforms…Windows, MAC OS and Linux. To show you what Air and hundreds of users have brought to the table, I thought I would give a quick run down on five of the most incredibly Adobe Air apps out there.

1. Snackr RSS Reader

Compile your RSS feeds into one large scrolling ticker on the bottom, top, or side of your monitor. A great way to simplify the hundreds of feeds you go through daily.

2. Twhirl – Desktop Twitter Client

We all know what Twitter has become. It has become it’s own standard, and virtually invented micro-blogging. The problem, it has no desktop client, so you are required to login to Twitter.com, or one of the many other websites you submit to. Twhirl gives you the ability to submit and read Tweets, directly from your desktop.

3. Desktop Ebay

Bring Ebay to your Desktop.

4. AirTube – YouTube video downloader

An easy way to quickly and easily download YouTube videos to your desktop.

5. MiniTask

A quick to-do list application to keep track of daily tasks and errands.

6. Google Analytics

Bring the Google web stats to your desktop, with this incredibly handy application.

7. Pandora Radio

Bring the awesomeness of Pandora Radio to your PC.

As you can see, Adobe is lacking in no departments, and there is not sign of slowing down. More and more applications are being submitted on a daily basis. Keep your eye out, and give me suggestions on your favorites.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

One of the few lacking features that Del.icio.us doesn’t have is a better organization/sort ability. Viewing by tags and viewing only the most current popular items. What Delicious needs to do is organize only the most popular items in the past hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, week, month, or even all time. This is what Popacular does. It’s a great place to find topics for blog posts, find the most popular of the past days topics, or even see what items are creeping towards being the most popular website of all time.

If you’re a fan of Digg, you should like something like this, although it’s much more stripped down and it lacks the obnoxious comments.

They also offer a Twitter app, that does the same thing.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

I still love Digg. Although not as much as I used to, when it was almost strictly technology based, I probably still frequent it, much more then any other website on the net. It still has the ability to bring almost each and every top story of the day, and do it before much of the rest of ‘mainstream media’.

One thing that Kevin Rose and company added during the growth to internet fame, was Digg Labs. A behind the scenes look at what is being dugg in real time, in a few various forms(Screenshots Below).

Well, for a while now, it hasn’t been publicized that much, but you can add each of these extremely innovative flash based products as a Windows or MAC screen saver. On each of the Digg Labs items, you will see screensaver download in the upper right-hand corner. Simply download the item for your respective operating system and run through the quick and easy installation.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

So, without any real indication that they were going to do so, MTV re-launched themselves not only into the Web 2.0 world, but into what they used to be involved in, the ‘Music’ world. They opened up MTVMusic.com to the world and with it, just about every music video ever created.

It’s much higher quality then YouTube and will likely be legal much longer then YouTube as well. It was really a major step for MTV and the music industry. They can finally put ‘Music’ back into their name. They do offer embedding, just like many of predecessors and few a other options as well.

The first video of which I had to watch, was ‘Thriller’ from the artist formerly known as Michael Jackson. It doesn’t quite look like the embed code is working on this blog, but it does work, because I did test it on mine.

Here is the link at least: Michael Jackson’s Thriller

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

After my long hiatus from blogging, one of the most exciting items I was looking forward to seeing was the upgrade of WordPress from the lower versions of 2.0, up to the substantially different 2.6.2. Competely revamped interface, tag additions, theme preview, plug-in upgrades, on and on. They really have come a long way and have one of the most incredibly solid open source products on the market. It really is one of the most incredibly easy to use, modifiable blogging platforms on the market.

Well, word has it, the next version of WordPress, is 2.7 and word has it, that it’s release date is in or around November 10th. Here is what we have to look forward to:

New admin UI based on the crazyhorse experimental UI branch with new menus and navigation

New edit post page that allows dragging and dropping of meta boxes. Boxes can be expanded and collapsed as before and now also completely hidden.

Ability to hide columns on the content index pages

Inline editing of posts and pages on the content index pages

Comments XMLRPC API (Who wants comment moderation on the iPhone? Me.)

Reply to comments from the admin

Keyboard hot keys for managing comments

Threaded Comments and new wp_list_comments() API

Sticky Posts

Automatic plugin install and integrated plugin browser

Automatic upgrade of WordPress

HTTPOnly auth cookies

New HTTP request API

A new SSH2 filesystem abstraction for updates and installs over sftp

Feature list found via WPHacks.com

What isn’t to like with some of these features…you have to love built in Upgrading, Reply to comments, threaded comments, and plug-in installation. Those are some of the big ones that I have my eye on. What about you? What do you like and what would you like to see in 2.8 or 3.0???

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

Amongst many of the several motivational items to get me back into shape, many of the dozens of Web 2.0 fitness sites have been included. Prior to this Web 2.0 boom, I was forced to rely on many of the lackluster fitness sites, that even included subscription fees. Presently with the boom, here are several of them:

DietTelevision – http://www.diettv.com

Traineo http://www.traineo.com

FatSecret – http://fatsecret.com

Fitday – http://fitday.com

WeightLossWars – http://www.weightlosswars.com

Gyminee – http://www.gyminee.com

The Daily Plate – http://www.thedailyplate.com

Inpowr – http://inpowr.com

RunFatBoy – http://www.runfatboy.net

iTrainHarder – http://www.itrainharder.com

Skinnyr – http://www.skinnyr.com

Gimme20 – http://www.gimme20.com

MyFoodDiary – http://www.myfooddiary.com

FitSync – http://www.fitsync.com

Granted, I haven’t tried all of the above, but I have tried a few and I personally don’t see how any of them can compare to www.sparkpeople.com.

Sparkpeople finally gets it right when it comes to motivating people to get off the couch and get on the go. All of the tracking pieces are there for fitness and food and they reward you for doing so. They have implemented a highly motivational point system that rewards you for not only working out, but also for just logging in on a regular basis, tracking what you eat, tracking your water consumption and many many many other items.

Along with of the things you can track, SparkPeople offers dozens of different videos and tutorials on workout routines, recipes and many different motivational e-mail newsletters.

All of these items are highly custmizable food plans, fitness plans, goals, streaks and many other amazing features. It’s hard to believe this is a free web app, because the amount of data you can compile and track over time is simply amazing.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

First and foremost, those of you who have been regular readers of ConnectedInternet, you all know me as TimmyJ, or Listikal from www.listikal.com. I stopped blogging last fall, because I was in the process of switching my day job and moving, all at the same time. A year has passed, and I have finally begun to find more time to start blogging again.

I’ve stopped posting at Listikal, but have started fresh at TheWindowsFix.com, in hopes to post frequently on lots of info, on all things Tech, but more geared towards Windows users specifically. On here, I’ll be writing about anything and everything. Anyways, enough about me, I’m here today, to get back into shape.

I just recently got engaged and am in desperate need of shedding a few pounds from all of the dining out I’ve been doing, during the past year and a half with my girlfriend/fiancee. Five or six years ago, I shed quite a few pounds from just sheer discipline and determination. I drank nothing but water(minus the booze), and ate a very strict, low calorie diet, which turned into a 30 pound loss, over a six month period. This also included cutting out all ‘fatty’ fast food and desserts of any kind. I was also a consistent gym guy, where I consistently went 3-4 times a week for as long as two hours.

Today, it’s a different story, I eat way to much junk food, hardly drink water and only find myself going to gym or being active, about 2-3 times a month. Well, even though I’ve only just begun to get back into working out again, I did make a significant purchase over the summer, which has really been a great motivator, it’s the Garmin Forerunner 305.

The Garmin Forerunner 305, is one of the greatest device I have ever come across for working out, outdoors. To put it simply, it’s the utlimate GPS device for bikers, runners and walkers. Once your strap it to your writst, you are set to track workout activities by using it’s satellite’s in the sky, to track your speed, distance, time, pace, you name it, it’s got it. All of the data is displayed on your watch in real time, but then when you get it home, you upload it to your computer where you can log the data for analysis, but can also see visually where you traveled for the day via their software or online software, at www.motionbased.com.

For those of you who prefer a video review:

You can pick the Forerunner 305 for under $200.00(USD) at Amazon.

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

The ever expanding World Wide Web is growing much to fast for any of us to keep up. So incredibly fast in fact, that we must rely on sites such as Del.icio.us or Digg to supply us the best of the best.

The vast majority of today’s sites are simply and almost always labeled Web 2.0. Here is Web 2.0 as defined by Wikipedia:

Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second generation of web-based communities and hosted services — such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies — which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.

How do we keep the millions of new Web 2.0 sites straight? We rely on blogs such as TechCrunch or Mashable to keep us up to date. But how do keep track of the rest? How about via the best Web 2.0 directory on the web.

Go2Web20.net is quite simply the prettiest and most innovative web directory I have seen to date. It organizes a substantial number of the best of the best of Web 2.0 with their fancy buttons, adds a small description to each, along with providing a tagging feature as well.

I’ve used it to find money management tools, for sale by owner real estate and online training logs. Of course quite possibly the best feature of today’s web, four letters….FREE

Check it out: http://www.go2web20.net/ (The Complete Web 2.0 Directory)

What do you think? Do you know of any better 2.0 directories?

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

Everyday, thousands of new bloggers fire up new blogs with aspirations of millions of dollars and little work at home.

They’ve read the latest from our good friend Everton Blair, the 17 year old .COM millionaire, or the out of work ASP programmer with a simple idea and a lot of time.

What did Ben Affleck say in Boiler Room?

“You become an employee of this firm, you will make your first million within three years. I’m gonna repeat that – you will make a million dollars.”

Well, Markus Frind of PlentyOfFish.com has done exactly that and then some. The difference is, he didn’t do it illegally, he did it alone, with just one programming language, three servers, and whole lot of help from the creators of ASP.net, Microsoft. Here is a short video, from American TV, on the largest ‘one manned’ website in the world.

What is surprising to me, is that Microsoft isn’t touting this guy more. He is surprising not only the ASP community, but the entire programming community in general. He is raking in, rumor has it, $5,000,000+ in yearly revenue, he works on the site less then 2hrs/day and he gets, according to him, updwards of 1 Billion page views/month.

While much larger pay sites, such as Match.com or Eharmony.com are setting up hundreds of servers, paying hundreds of staff and forcing people to pay at minimum $30.00/month, PlentyOfFish.com has done all of this for FREE, with no staff and a lot of help from Google Adsense. Truly a prime example of success in this Web 2.0 world.

What are your thoughts of Markus’s success? Anybody who isn’t jealous of his success?

Posted on Connected Internet - tech, mobile and gaming news.

I’ve been waiting for a legitimate company to release DRM-free music, so I may take the plunge for the new iPod Touch. The iPod touch is by far the first device I’ve wanted to purchase from Apple.

Don’t get me wrong, Steve Jobs is a genius, he knows what people want and when the right time is to release it. He brought Apple from $7.00/share to $150/share in just five years. All single handedly to everyones favorite device, the iPod. My biggest beef with the entire iPod series has been DRM and iTunes.

Well today, Amazon released the first in what will hopefully be a string of DRM-free music services with, for the first time, a long list of big name artists. This is finally what everybody has wanted, freedom to do what they want with their music. The ability to upload their tunes onto any and all devices without limits. Let’s hope Amazon can somehow pull this off, so iTunes and company, will follow suit.

What are your thoughts? Are DRM free MP3s the way of the future? Is subscription based music what we should look forward to? or is iTunes now and forever?

ps – If you hadn’t noticed, this was the first in what will hopefully be a long list of contributions to ConnectedInternet. My name is Tim(aka TimmyJ) and I am the present and somewhat former editor and chief of Listikal.com. I decided recently that I was lacking the time to maintain my blog on a consistent basis and that making contributions on a semi-regular basis to Evertons would be much more realistic. You’ll see me writing about many different things now and in the future, including Web 2.0, gadgets and gizmos, blogging and money making.
