Nokia N80 Preview - THE Phone To Have in 2006
I’ve just read AllAboutSymbian’s review of the new Nokia N80 and if I wasn’t sure whether or not to get one before, I am now. The report couldn’t be more glowing:
In November 2002, The Economist featured the Nokia 7650 on its cover, saying it heralded ‘Computing’s new shape’. Three years on, the N80 is the natural successor to the 7650, both in terms of significance and iconic design. The 7650 signaled the coming of the smartphone, I think the N80 heralds fulfillment of the early promise; to borrow a phrase, the 7650 was the beginning, the N80 is the end of the beginning.
This will be the ULTIMATE smartphone next year. If you are planning an upgrade in the next couple of months like me I would hold out and wait for this phone Q1 of next year. The key factors for me are the small form factor, the larger and more detailed screen, 3MP camera and 802.11g WiFi support. AllAboutSymbian have put together a diagram to demonstrate how much bigger the screen is. As you can see below it’s like going from a 25 inch TV screen to a 40 inch screen.

If that wasn’t enough, the phone also has Quadband coverage making it the first true global phone, an updated browser and UPnP support. UPnP is an industry standard that allows you to interact (auto-discovery of services and capabilities and remote control of those devices) with other devices over a network. The advantage on UPnP is that it makes using and sharing your media much easier.
I definitely recommend reading the whole preview. Nokia has worked hard to regain market share in the last 12 months or so, and that hard work is starting to pay off. Might be time to buy some Nokia stock….
