3G Video Calls - is the cost structure all wrong?
I’ve just come back from a Vodafone store. In-store I learnt that there were new tariffs available where I could make calls of up to 60 mins in length for free off-peak and at weekends.
The problem I faced though, was that in order to sign-up for these new tariffs I would lose the 50 [...]
Nokia 6680 review
I won’t be doing a review of the 6680 as I’m going to wait for a N70 or a N91 as my next upgrade. However, for those of you who are still considering the 6680, including Errol, then here’s infosyncworld’s write-up.
Their summary was:
‘Whether the Nokia 6680 is an improvement over its predecessor, the 6630, [...]
Super 3G Hotspots to arrive in 2006
I’ve found 3G to be quite a let-down while I’m on the move as for some reason my signal is never strong enough. Hopefully, this will be fixed as the 3G networks expand.
By 2006, hopefully things will be even better as Super 3G should have arrived. Apparently the networks will roll out in [...]
Skype will be available on Symbian phones in 2005
Straight from the horses mouth, well Skype’s CEO’s. At the Voice On the Net (VON) conference in Toronto Skype’s CEO said they were working on mobile versions.
Skype currently runs on Mac OSX, Windows and Pocket PC, Skype plans to release a version for Embedded Linux, Symbian or Windows Mobile devices later this year.
I hope the [...]

My dodgy router is being repaired by DLink at the mo. If it comes back still not working properly, I think I’m going to go for one of these as I think [...]
Wireless LANs on trains
Mobile Market Research have published some interesting market data. They have predicted that revenues from wireless LANs on trains will reach £6.2 million (€8.8 million) by the end of 2005 in the UK and £0.8 million (€1.1 million) in France. I’ve never used a wireless LAN on a train yet, but the next time I’m [...]

An article by Wireless Wonder made me realise that presence could be used for more than just reporting whether a person is available, busy, offline etc.
The author, Paul G had worked on a presence application for car garages. It made me think-why not use presence in home automation? e.g a front door [...]
Wi-Max/VoIP to threaten 3G?
More on the threat of Wi-Max to 3G from Mobile Phone Fan.
15Apr2005 | Everton | 0 comments | ContinuedDeveloping regions prove valuable testing ground for WiMAX
Interesting article on Rethink that predicts that WiMAX will take off more quickly in developing regions such as India, than in mature economies, partly because of the lack of broadband infrastructure in these areas, but also because they provide a low risk testing ground for operators and equipment vendors.
Without the conflicts of interest of trying [...]
How successful is 3G REALLY in the UK?
I’m getting mixed messages about 3G take-up in the UK. On one hand, 3 announce that they have added 3m subscribers, and then on the other that Vodafone is thought to have attracted fewer than 200,000 customers in the UK to date, and Virgin Mobile have announced that they are pulling back from a [...]
