Many PC’s come with pre-installed software from manufacturers, most of it is bloatware and useless to the majority of users. A lot of it never really seems to work right, or you have to sign up to something or it’s only a limited trial. My advice, get rid of it all, you’ve got a new PC, let’s start with a clean slate and keep it running as fast as it was the day you got it.

So that brings me on nicely to the first piece of software.

Revo Uninstaller Free Version

Revo used to be completely free but recently they’ve decided they want to make a bit of money, however they still offer their original free one for free, and you can buy a more advanced paid pro version if you wish, but you shouldn’t need it.

Revo uninstaller allows you to uninstall any program on your machine quickly, but what makes this different from your built in uninstaller is that it removes all the leftover files as well. So often when you uninstall a program,it leaves behind files and un needed registry keys which are hard to track down and manually delete. Revo will do this for you quickly and easily,

Google Chrome

I know many people have their own favourite browser, be it Firefox or Internet Explorer. But I’m strongly suggesting to all of you to give Google Chrome a go. It’s so quick and clean, light and easy to use its ridiculous. There’s just no waiting around with it, and it also has the option to add themes, extensions and nothing seems to slow it down.

It’s constantly being updated by the Google team, and you know if it’s from Google they’ve lots of resources to pump into it

GIMP

This has to be one of my favourite programs. If you are ever doing any graphic design of any sort, or just want to mess around with a picture, GIMP is your tool.

Many people splash out and spends hundreds buying photoshop, but why would you do that if there was an equally good alternative for free? GIMP can do everything that photoshop does, but it’s free. Yes the UI may be slightly different, but there’s nothing that you can’t really do with it.

It’s well worth a look at it you’re planning on doing any photo editing or graphic design.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Normally when you buy a computer you will either get antivirus pre-installed, or you will get a trial version of one. My advice, unless you’ve been given a full copy of a program, uninstall it and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It’s one of the best antivirus programs out there and does just as good, if not a better job than all the other antivirus suites. It’s free, it’s light and you don’t even know its installed on your system, but it does it’s job. A must have for me

Again another great little program for maintaining your PC. It’s great to just run this program every two weeks or so just to keep on top of things.

It will clean up any unnecessary files hanging around on your machine and even have a look through your registry for any files that shouldn’t be there that are just filling up your PC with junk.

Unfortunately with blogging, you have to take the good with the bad, and I’m afraid I know just as well as any other blogger how much spam you can get on your blog. When your site is small, spam isn’t too bad, however, you will find that the only comments your getting on your blog, are actually spam ones.

The amount of comments I get on my blog which are either pointless comments ( ie. Hey, Nice Site, I’ve bookmarked it for future reading) or an annoying spam link which links back to a site which will try and sell you something is really annoying. Now I do get legit comments on my site, however it’s a tough job filtering out the legit comments from the spam ones when your getting over 100 spam comments a day.

At first it wasn’t too bad, I was easily able to sort out the odd spam comments from the legit comments, but as my site has grown, so have the numbers of spam comments.

By default, all WordPress blogs come with the Akismet plugin. Now if it wasn’t for this plugin, your blog would be overrun with spammers comments right from the beginning. Akismet does a fairly good job at preventing spam comments, however sometimes if an author has been flagged before or if the Aksimet algorithm doesn’t agree with their comment, you may find that your missing out on legit, beneficial comments.

So I’ve managed to come up with the best solution for preventing spam on my blog.

You wil need to use two plugins, the first is Akismet which comes as standard on your wordpress blog. The second plugin you need to grab is the Conditional Captcha plugin.

Once installed and activated, this plugin will work in conjunction with Akismet to prevent spam comments. Basically, when Akismet thinks a comment in spam, it then gets sent to the Conditional Captcha plugin, which will ask the commenter to fill in a captcha field to confirm that they are in fact human. Since spam comments generally come from spam bots, they all fail at this final hurdle and get sent to the trash.

It’s great because if someones actual legit comment is marked as spam, it still gives them a chance to save their comment from the spam pile by filling in the Captcha field.

I’ve used this plugin with much success over the last few weeks, and so far I’ve saved my blogs from over 1000 spam comments!

I know many of you may be shouting at me now saying, “Why do you even use IE in the first place!” Well first off, don’t worry, I don’t use it. I’m a Chrome user myself, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have IE installed on my machine and use it the odd time. I also know that the vast majority of web users use it and many people are forced to use it for work purposes etc…

We all know that IE isn’t exactly a speed daemon, especially when it comes to opening up new tabs, it just seems to crawl along. But there’s a reason for all this. It’s because of your add-ons, generally toolbars.

See this table below of the most popular IE add-ons sorted by the amount of slowness that they add to IE’s load times.

As you can see some of the most popular tool bars like AVG, AOL and even Windows Live are at the top of this table and are probably the main culprits for slowing down IE on you. Every time you load up IE you have to load up these tool-bars and add-ons as well, and they probably aren’t very well optimized for quick loading.

So how do you quickly speed up IE again? Simply disable these add-ons and toolbars and you should see a dramatic improvement.

One of the first ways to do this is to simply click the “X” on the far left of toolbars and this will disable them.

And the other way to disable toolbars as well as other add-ons is to go to tools and then manage add-ons.

You will then be able to see the toolbars and other add ons installed, as well as there load times. You can then disable whatever ones you dont want from here and you should see a decrease in IE’s load time.

The Google Pagerank is one of the most talked about terms on the blogosphere. Bloggers can spend hours researching and reading up to find out how they can get themselves a good Pagerank, thinking that it will automatically mean they get more traffic, and therefore make more money.

We’ll I’m afraid this isn’t always true, I have two of my own sites, Techinfo-4u has a page rank of 3 and NextiPhoneNews has a page rank of 2. My iPhone site has traffic that is 3 times that of Techinfo-4u, even though it’s got a lower pagerank.

However my iPhone site is only recently set up compared to my other one, so it will be interesting to see how the pageranks change the next time Google updates them (which is due anytime now).

But don’t get me wrong, your pagerank can be very important. You’ll find the more your pagerank grows, the higher the number of opportunities you will get from people to review products, link to them and advertise with you etc… When people are browsing the web, quite often they will look at a sites pagerank quickly and may make a quick assumption based on it as to whether or not they stay on your site. You will also rank better in Google searches with a better pagerank.

So it is important, but how do you go about getting a good pagerank?

Well it’s calculated on many many different factors, but in general it’s the number of sites linking back to your own. The more sites the better, and the higher the pagerank of the sites linking back in the better.

This interesting table below which I found on tnx shows how the Google pagerank is calculated. It shows you how many backlinks you’d need from sites of a certain pagerank to achieve whatever pagerank your looking to get.

Now I wouldn’t take this as the actual method that Google uses for calculating your pagerank, it does depend on your traffic somewhat and other various aspects of your site. But it is a good reference and quite beneficial and let’s you see just what you need to do to get a good pagerank.

Be wary however of paid link exchange directories as Google doesn’t approve of these “link farms” you won’t get any real traffic from them and Google is known to penalize sites with too many links from paid link sites and directories. Avoid these and instead spend your time producing great content which sites with a high pagerank will want to link back to.

Too many people spend too much time worrying over their pagerank, I never work on improving my pagerank, you should just let it improve itself naturally. There is no point in wasting your time trying to get half a million links from sites with a pagerank of 2 just so you can get a pagerank of 8. These sort of things happen naturally over time, you can’t expect your pagerank to just jump up without any great content.

So instead of begging sites to link back to you, spend your time working on producing great content and let sites naturally link back to you.

Two groups have been involved in the development of HTML standards. One is the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the other is the Web Hypertext Application Working Group (WHATWG). So when the latest version of HTML5 was presented, one would think that there would be little disagreement between these two groups.

For one, the World Wide Web Consortium has been absent from standards development for some time; that job has gone to the Web Hypertext Application Working Group. So there would be some friction between them.

Here is an example of the raucous e-mails floating around. “”childish,” “intolerable,” “ridiculous,” “shenanigans.” And there’s a concrete manifestation of the divisiveness: The WHATWG and W3C versions of the HTML5 specification, though both stemming from the same source material, have diverged in some areas.

Many differences are relatively small. Moreover, there are strong reasons to bring the two drafts of the HTML5 specification together. Mainly it would be a real problem for browser makers and Web developers to be faced with two incompatible standards for the same product.  Nevertheless, these overseers of the Web are stepping on each other during a time when their new standard is just arriving in the spotlight.

What does HTML5 Offer to developers?

HTML5 has a number of  important features. One is the ability to embed audio and video directly into a Web page without relying on Adobe Systems’ Flash Player plug-in. Another new feature, is the Canvas for 2D graphics and geolocation for Web sites to know a person’s physical location. These are standardized in the WHATWG version but aren’t in the W3C draft of HTML5. Other changes include an effort to codify how Web browsers should implement Web pages.

So some of the success of HTML5 will be dependent on compatibility: developers will want to write a single version of a Web page rather than creating different versions for different browsers. That is what the fight is about. Which version will be standard?

A torrent is a distribution technology that allows users to share files, videos, music, books, e-books or other electronic products that have text, pictures, or music. The torrents allow downloading of these files because users that have the files on their computer are able to connect with other users and provide a sharing operation. Users can upload or download the files. The issue is that many of the files that are downloaded have copywrites, and the downloads are without permission. In other words, the downloads are illegal.

But ClearBits is a legal torrent.  The downloads that are available there will not violate a copywrite. Users are permitted to download the files.

ClearBits

ClearBits distributes artwork, open-licensed digital media, and datasets for content creators. They also host creative content in its entirety. The produce reliable and fast downloads. They also enable users to directly sponsor content producers and their work.  But in the area of legal content they distribute files with permission from the rights holders. They began operations in 2003. In 2010, the site changed names calling it LegalTorrents.

Now they charge content creators for hosting and distribution. The have a voluntary group of supporting memberships for indivuduals who are interested in supporting Open Content publishing. They also help in the publishing, editing, and content reviewing on ClearBits.

If you are interested in downloading files, ClearBits distributes content using bittorrents. They are indicated by a blue arrow on the site. When you click on the arrow, you can download content using a java applet from Bitlet.org. Using this applet will download the content to your computer.

There are a lot of browsers available besides the Internet Explorer. Many are making a mark for themselves for being more secure, faster, and user friendly. Among those is Opera. Now, you can make modifications to your Opera browser by downloading files or copying code into the browser.  At the site and with codes or files that are available on the site you can extend and modify Opera. Opera gives users the ability to modify its behaviour as well as the behaviour of the websites you visit.  Different Opera users can share their experiences or code to make modifications and additions to the browser.

Here are some samples of modifications that you can make:

• Auto-Hide Status Bar:  This shows a temporary status bar when the cursor is over a link (chrome-like)
• Wrap plain text files: This wraps long lines in plain text files to desired width.
• Open links in background tab with long mouse/touchpad press.:You can opens a link in a backgound with long mouse/toucpad press.
• Wikipedia: Redesigned, which can make it easier to read Wikipedia articles.

User JavaScript

User javascript can be used for many things. They can fix websites that are broken in Opera. Or they can add features to sites, to make browsing them more user friendly. They can even be used to add features to the browser itself. Here are some examples:

• Show Just Image: If you would lie to removes garbage from some image hosting sites and only display the image, this is the file your want.
• Google pager: This will insert the next page of results when the Google search page is scrolled to the bottom.

User CSS

• With Opera and User CSS files it is possible to override the way a page looks and make it look the way you want it to.
• Chrome’s status-bar for Opera browser: This will show the status field instead of status-bar, the way that Chrome does.

The .NET Framework is used by new applications created in the Windows platform. The execution of the programs is in the Common Language Runtime. With high speed internet and broadband widely available these days, web designers don’t have to worry half as much as they used to when designing sites. Even the most basic sites would have to carefully planned so that a user on a 56 kbps dial up connection would be able to load the site before the day was over. However nowadays I think it’s fair to say that everyone has a minimum of 1 mbps broadband connection, many of us have more.

So web designers got lazy and didn’t optimise their sites half as much as they used to and as a result websites have become bloated with excess code and large images etc… You will still rarely find a site that won’t load in under 10 seconds but that’s only because our internet connections are, in most cases up to the task.

But now there maybe a new incentive out there for web designers to optimise their sites for speed once again. Google is now factoring the speed at which a site loads into its search results. They have recognised that consumers demand for instant news and information on the web has increased dramatically and our attentions spans are decreasing rapidly.

Google has a largely unknown recipe for how it organises its search results, but now we know a new ingredient is: site speed. There had been hints out on the web for the last few months that this may be coming but now it’s official. Two of Google’s search engineers have decided to spill the beans for us. Amit Singhal and principal engineer Matt Cutts announced the news last Friday in a blog post and said that’s actually been live for a couple of weeks unknown to us. Google is using a variety of components and factors to determine how much faster one Web page responds compared to another.

However speed won’t be playing a major role in search results and you won’t be getting the number one spot because your site loads in half a second since Google has over 200 other factors which it bases its search results on. Google have said the change should affect fewer than 1 percent of search query results.

Still I think this is a move in the right direction as site owners are becoming lazy when it comes to optimising their sites for speed and this might give them an incentive to work on it a bit.

Apple, the force behind WebKit, which is a layout engine that is designed to allow web browsers to present web pages, is retooling the product to take advantage of multiple CPU cores.

Many of the features that we take for granted when using a browser come from the WebKit engine. For instance it provides a set of programming classes that will display web content in windows, and implement browser features like following links when clicked, or managing a back-forward list, or managing a history of pages recently visited. Most of the features that we use and the html code that we see are run through the Webkit engine.

Now Apple has announced that a new interface called WebKit2 will be re-designed using the old WebKit model, as a starting point, to support a split process model. In the WebKit2 model the web content such as JavaScript, HTML, layout, and others will live in a separate process. This has some similarities to a feature that Google Chrome offers, but with the major difference that is built into the process directly into the framework.

The difference is that you now have two processes that are involved a UI process and a Web Process. Ideally, these will use two different cores for performance and operation.  WebKit2 changes the WebKit stack to build a process management mechanism inside the WebKit API layer.

The idea behind all of this is multiprocessor design. Multiprocess designs seem to be accelerating throughout the browser industry. One way is by moving plug-ins, such as Adobe Flash, to a separate process. This can reduce the severity of crashes by isolating the problem.

Carbonite places a small software program on your computer that works in the background looking for new and changed files to back up. The last online backup system we look at is Jungle Disk. It has two versions, a personal and business class. The personal can be accessed for as little as 2 dollars per month, the business class for as little as 4 dollars a month.

The Business class provides desktop and server backups, file sharing and real-time sync designed for multiple users and teams. The personal is simple to operate, with automatic online backups, storage, and real-time sync between one or more computers.

These backup systems can ease the mind of a user with personal information or an IT administrator with thousands of computers and servers that need to be backed up. Disasters can occur at any time and only by having an off-site plan can a true disaster recovery program be implemented. Are you caught up with indecision and just cant figure out which smartphone is the best for you? It’s time to separate the good from the bad, but how? Well it’s just a simple matter of downloading a drawing application and making a series of lines in a criss cross pattern across the screen.

A while back I put up this post, showing how you could test a smartphones touchscreen. It was really quite simple, but you got good results that mattered. This was originally carried out by MOTO Development Labs and now they’ve decided to revisit it. This time testing it on more devices but also adding a robot into the mix.

Some critics refused to accept the test results as the lines were drawn by a human, thus increasing the chances of an error or even prejudice towards one smartphone or another. So to clear things up, MOTO has built a robot to do the job for us.

After we published our first comparison of four touchscreen smartphones, a few critics found fault with our DIY testing technique. Many of these comments centered around the idea that our human-finger methodology is prone to inconsistency, due to variables in finger pressure, line-straightness, or tracing speed.

So now the results are back in again, and what have we got this time?

Well the winners yet again seem to be the Apple iPhone and the Nexus One/ Droid Eris.

Pretty much all the phones performed well in the first test with a thicker finger and more pressure, but when it came down to the finer point and lighter touch, many of the phones lost signal completely.

You can see for yourself how they did and the results are fairly similar to the first time they did them.

Now many users are envious of that pretty impressive dock that you will find on Macs. Several people have said that Microsoft copied Apple with the new taskbar that they introduced into their latest operating system, Windows 7. While I personally think this new dock is a great addition to the OS and it has some important differences, some people may insist that it’s Apples idea so Apples dock is just better!

Well here is how you can add the Mac OS dock to any Windows Machine Running XP, Vista and Windows 7.

There is a great application that you can download called RocketDock, and what’s truly great about this is the fact that it’s completely free.

It’s very simple to use, just click here to download it and then install.

You then get your dock up and running by either double clicking the “RocketDock” desktop icon or go to all programs and launch RocketDock.

You will then see the Dock pop up complete with the nice bubble zoom effect that’s also present on the Mac OS Dock.

In a way it’s also very like the Windows 7 dock. To add programs to the dock, simply drag a desktop icon or shortcut to the dock and it will automatically fit in and pin itself there. To remove them simply drag them out.

By going into the settings you will find lots of options from positioning the dock to the different themes available for it, so you can customise it exactly how you want. You can also change the mouse over effect and icon size, there’s lots of settings in there for you to mess around with.

It’s a great little program and you can set it to run at start up and also have it set to overlay everything so you can use it just like on the Mac, and as I said it’s completely free!

One of the big problems with the world’s “best browsing experience” on Apple’s new iPad is the complete absence of Adobe Flash support.  Shailpik Biswas wrote about this specific point here earlier, which frankly is a biggie for a great many people.  But there’s also another question, as an internet device, will the iPad (and similar systems such as Android which will be appearing on many clone devices) stifle innovation on the world-wide web?

Some time ago we reached a point where the hardware we were buying was able to do things far faster and more powerfully than we need, at least with society the way it is today.  But with browser-based devices the technology will always be ahead of the things we use them for, they have to be.

The lack of support for Flash is just a small part of this but the hardware that these devices run on is also another factor.  You see while hardware may generally be ahead of what we need, in order to reach the magic price/performance mark, manufacturers such as Apple have to make compromises.

This means that web-apps have an upper limit of what resources are there for them to use in the browser.  While this isn’t a problem while web developers are constantly innovating, limiting the available hardware like this might stifle much of that.

To highlight what I mean when Microsoft were developing Windows Vista they had a dream of interactive web apps using a system called Windows Presentation Foundation.

While this system was in beta, and called Avalon, Microsoft had grand plans for it.  They wanted to allow people to build interactive web-apps with effects such as transparencies, 3D, reflections and depth all being rendered by Windows itself.  The aim was to allow people buying, for instance, a pair of shoes to examine the shoes in their browser in an interactive 3D way, just like they were in the shop holding the physical item.  All this would have required the minimum bandwidth because all of the work would have been done on the client computer, without needing to be processed in the clouds and sent frame by frame.  This is very similar to what Flash and Silverlight do but would have worked directly with existing HTML and XML code.

When it was dropped, some of those features were subsumed into Silverlight and some will find their way into Internet Explorer 9, which will use the graphics processor on your PC to render web graphics.

The lack of support for not only Flash, but Silverlight on the iPad will act as the biggest possible barrier to this type of web innovation ever taking place.  It simply won’t happen unless companies build in both the hardware and software support.

Avalon created a huge amount of buzz and excitement in the web community and left a lot of people disappointed when it was pulled.  Essentially we’re still left, possibly permanently, with the existing way the web works.  Flat two-dimensional list-based sites with Amazon being a prime example.

Now we’ve got netbooks and low-capability devices such as this new breed of tablets, are we forever, or at least for the next few years, waving goodbye to this new way of interacting with the internet?  Certainly if the processing and graphics power required for this type of new web experience isn’t available on every net-connected device (mobile phones possibly excluded as they have their own mobile sites anyway) technology companies will have no reason to innovate and something like Avalon might never appear again.

It’s a shame really, though one that processors such as Intel’s new i3 and i5 line, with their integrated graphics chips, might start to redress.  We can only hope that similar processors begin to find their way into net-connected devices soon.

When a new touchscreen smartphone comes out, one of the first things we want to find out is how good a touchscreen it has. Well we can read all the reviews we want, watch all the hands-on videos we can and search Google for answers we won’t find. But now there is a definitive way to sort out the good touch screens from the bad ones.

Moto Development Labs has devised a simple way to analyse the accuracy of a capacitive touchscreen using nothing more than a simple drawing program. They demonstrated how they compared the different touchscreen’s of the iPhone, HTC Droid Eris, Motorola Droid, and Nexus One. The results easily show us the differences between the touchscreen’s on each of the smartphones.

So what do these criss-cross patterns mean? Well to achieve them, all you have to do is open up a simple drawing app on your smartphone, then you draw a series of diagonal lines slowly from one side of the screen to the other until your left with a criss-cross pattern on your screen.

The straighter the lines, the more accurate the touchscreen, if the lines are wavy or jagged, well lets just say the touchscreen isn’t what it should be.

The first phone they tested was the iPhone, and as we can see the lines are relatively straight apart from at the edges where the screen seems to lose some of its accuracy. The worst of the bunch is the Motorola Droid which looks more like a jigsaw puzzle compared to the iPhone. These jagged lines show that the Droids touchscreen could cause you to miss a letter on an on-screen keyboard, luckily for the Droid it has a physical keyboard.

The Nexus One and HTC Droid Eris fared pretty well but not quite as good as the iPhone. They were more accurate however at the edges of their screens compared to the iPhone.

Once you are done with setting up the options in the first window and uploading any files you wanted to upload you can move on the main icloud which looks like the image below:

You can see that the interface is very similar to our operating systems. The desktop is there with icons on it. The taskbar is located at the bottom with the “Start menu” to the left. The system tray is also there, in the bottom right.

You can the desktop icons by double-clicking on them. Here is how the Mail program looks like:

You are provided with your own email in the format . You can add email accounts to Mail from the Tools menu. Click on Mail Accounts to be shown this screen:

Click on add and then click your email client. Once done click Next, and set up your email account to receive your mail in icloud’s Mail.

Messenger within icloud will let you chat to your friends within a web messenger like window.

Apart from Mail and Messenger, icloud includes other programs to make it look more like an operating system rather than a file hosting site. The panel to on the left presents one with various functionality including Contacts, Calendar, and Bookmarks. With the Photos, Music, and Movie tools you can view your uploaded media in icloud’s built-in players. You also get various utility applications namely, Calculator, Notepad, and the ability to unzip archives.

To access your files in a way similar to Windows Explorer, access the Cloud Drive:

Icloud has been successful, to a great degree, in bringing the operating system to the internet. In the future when internet speeds are faster and icloud offers even more storage space, many computer users will not need to own a computer to store their data; files could be accessed in icloud by using any computer!

Designers and developers scrutinize others’ webpages and programs, looking for positive points which they can incorporate into their projects as well. Often they find the dimensions of a particular banner, advertisement, text field, etc. to be perfect. Obviously one cannot find out the exact dimensions by simply looking at the area; one needs to employ a certain tool for the job.

The said dimensions can be found using a number of tools that are freely available online. But if you are looking for the most easy-to-use tool, then myRuler is what you need.  The size of the setup file for myRuler is only 450KB. Size at less than half a megabyte, you can download and install this ruler in no time.

Here is how myRuler looks like by default:

The scale shows pixel markings and the number at top shows the total pixel length of the ruler. This pixel length on the first run is 500. In subsequent runs the length remains what it was when you exit the program.

You place the ruler against anything, adjust the length according to the object, and find from the ruler’s reading how many pixel does that particular length cover.

The ruler’s length can be changed by your mouse pointer pulling or pushing either side of the ruler. You can right-click on the ruler anytime and change its orientation from horizontal to vertical (and vice versa):

You also have four color schemes to choose from: Default, Office 2007, Gray, and Orange.

If you enter the ‘About’ section of the program (either by pressing the F1 key or clicking ‘About’ in the right-click menu), you will see some keyboard shortcuts which will help you better work with myRuler.

While this particular ruler serves its desired purpose, a huge journey lies ahead before it catches up to other popular rulers. Some of myRuler’s shortcomings include:

• myRuler’s length can only be adjusted from one side.
• myRuler does not have a transparent color scheme.
• As myRuler’s length is adjusted, the top reading changes but the scale markings become distorted, often unreadable.
• myRuler can only be adjusted to measure perfectly horizontal or vertical objects; you cannot use myRuler to measure the pixel length of objects at an angle.

The issues will certainly discourage the experienced developer from using myRuler. Hopefully the program will be improved to math other similar programs available on the net. Meanwhile, the average computer user will find myRuler quite useful.

Websites make money through advertisements; sometimes these advertisements are placed in positions where the site user is forced to look at them. Take your email sites as examples: on the left you get emails listed and on the right you get a vertical banner. In most cases these banners distract you by just being there but in certain cases, all it takes is your mouse pointer to hover over them (this can happen accidentally while you’re reading your email) and the ad will expand, taking up a major portion of the screen.

These ads prove to be most menacing when one is reading emails. And if you use Yahoo, Gmail, or Windows Live (Hotmail) to send/receive emails then you can eliminate this problem by equipping your Firefox browser with a nifty add-on called WebMail Ad Blocker.  The developer of this add-on started out by eliminating the distracting advertisement one sees while checking emails on Gmail; soon however, he added support for Hotmail and Yahoo.

For Hotmail, here’s how the right portion of your inbox looks like without this add-on enabled:

The portion on the right is reserved for advertisements and changes regularly. With WebMail Ad Blocker you can select what things are shown in Hotmail while you check your mail. Simply access the add-on’s options (by going into Tools->Add-ons) and go to the Hotmail tab:

Regarding Hotmail you only get the option to block advertisements and choose whether or not to display a link where you can leave donations for the add-on. Once you choose to block ads, the right side of your mailbox will be completely free and you will have more room to read your emails:

Similarly you can adjust options for Gmail and Yahoo. For Gmail you get more options to choose from:

For Yahoo, the options are the same as the Hotmail tab.

Without compromising on page load-up times, this add-on blocks those pesky ads that come in the way of your email reading. The only requirement is for you to have Firefox on your system. The developer is currently working on an Internet Explorer version of WebMail Ad Blocker; soon the same convenience will be enjoyed by Internet Explorer users as well.

Speedup External Hard Drives

Write caching is disabled for external drives by default in Windows, so that you can remove external drives without losing any data.  Enabling write caching will provide a significant performance increase for external drives:

1. Click Start and type “Device Manager” and open Device Manager
2. Expand “Disk drives” and right-click your external hard drive and select Properties
3. click the “Policies” tab and click “Optimize for performance”
4. Check “Enable write caching on the device” and “Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device” then click Ok
5. Reboot to apply changes

Increase SATA Disk Performance

Enabling write caching will also improve SATA hard drive performance

1. Follow steps 1 to 3 above, but select your SATA drives
2. Only check “Enable write caching on the device” and then click Ok
3. Reboot to apply changes

Faster Menus & Mouse

Reduce the amount of time it takes for menus to appear:.

1. Click Start and type “regedit”  and open the Registry Editor
2. Left-click on the expandable arrow next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and expand the Control Panel folder, and then select “Desktop”
3. On the right hand side find “MenuShowDelay” and doubleclick it. Reduce the value to any number between 400 (default) and 1 – the lower the number the smaller the delay in ms between clicking on a menu and the action occuring
4. Now below Desktop on the left select “Mouse”.  On the right hand side find “MouseHoverTime” and doubleclick and chose a low number for faster mouseovers
5. Reboot

Disable Thumbnail Previews

Windows 7′s thumbnail preview feature takes up a lot of resources just to show a few small images rather than folder icons.  To disable the thumbnail previews:

1. Open Computer and click on “Organise” in the menu and select “Folder and Search” options
2. Click on the “View” tab and in the “Files and Folders” options check the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option
3. Click “Apply” and then OK

Faster Windows 7 Taskbar

Another registry tweak that will reduce the amount of resources used to create your Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnail previews:

1. Click Start and type “regedit”  and open the Registry Editor
2. Left-click on the expandable arrow next to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” and then “Software” and expand until you get to the Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced folder
3. Right click on Advanced and select “New DWORD”, then enter the following value: “ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime”
4. Right click on “ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime” and select “Modify”.  Choose “Decimal Base” and enter your new number in milliseconds.  A good number to use is 200.
5. Select “Ok” and then reboot

Sometimes those UH-OH days happen and you need to reinstall your OS. When that happens, a bootable thumb drive can save time without optical drives (flash discs are much faster) or having to carry the original setup disc with you. Such thumb drives make all the more sense when the netbook that crashed doesn’t have a CD ROM- in this case, the only way to revive the computer is with the thumbdrive!. Here’s a quick way to making a bootable USB key under either Vista or Windows 7 in just 8 easy steps.

1. Activate the Windows Command Prompt in your Start Menu and execute as an Administrator.

2. Type “diskpart” to launch Microsoft’s disk management utility. The command line should now read “DISKPART>”.

3. Enter in “list disk” to show a list of all disk drives. Your USB should come up.

4. Enter select disk #, with the thumbdrive’s disk number in place of #.

5. Enter clean for the utility to clean the disk, which DiskPart will then execute.

6. This is the easy part. Create a bootable partition by selecting create partition primary.

7. Make this partition active.

8. Format the key by inputting format fs=fat32. For some reason NTFS format doesn’t allow a USB disc to boot..

Presto! You have a bootable flashdisk! It’s fast, it’s zippy, and if it is at least 1Gig, you can transfer the entire OS onto it for rapid setup. Sure beats carrying a stack of 1.44MB floppies around eh?

Just by clicking on any one of the videos, the bottom video is refreshed into the one you want to watch. No time is wasted on page loading, only the video is loaded which saves you precious time.

Moreover with TubeRadio you can access public playlists created by other users. Say you want searched for Metallica and want to add all their albums to your ‘Metallica’ playlist. Selecting to play a public playlist titled ‘Metallica’ would be a lot faster than selecting all the Metallica albums and then adding them to your list. The public playlists can be accessed by clicking on the Public Playlists tab once your search has been completed.

The best part is that  can even create shared  folders to pass files along to your friends and loved once.

You can place it over your text/picture/video and then adjust the size by moving the scale markings; the dimensions of the box tell you the dimensions of area it covers. For instance, here is what I needed to do in order to find the dimensions of the text typed in the above screenshot:

And viola! I can obtain the dimensions of the text behind the blue window.

The transparency of the blue window can be easily by scrolling the mouse wheel forwards or backwards. If you need precision while moving the sliders, you can use your keyboards to adjust each side pixel by pixel.

Storing information in PDF documents always come in handy when you do not want the viewer to be able to simply copy’paste your text/material/information from your document to somewhere else. Furthermore, PDF documents also offer a smaller size for most files for instance an image, if converted to a PDF document, will almost always be compressed in size.

I have been creating and working with PDF documents for a long time now and the data I have been able to incorporate within my PDF’s was text and images. Today we explore an extremely useful freeware, PDF Annot, which lets the user enter audio and text annotations to an existing PDF file.

The setup file to be downloaded is ~8 MB large and is required for installation. Installation takes place in a standard manner and everything is clear. One downloaded, your desktop will have an icon named PDF Annot.

Use PDF Annot to open any PDF file. To take PDF Annot out on a test drive, I made a simple PDF file that had the text “Checking out PDF Annot” contained.

To add audio/text annotations to your PDF files, double click on the PDF Annot icon and when the program opens, go to File -> Open a PDF, and browse over to the folder where the PDF file is. In my case, here is how adding the PDF file to PDF Annot looked like:

The left panel shows the number of pages in the PDF and the section on the right shows us the PDF. To add annotations, in the main menu click on ‘PDFViewerAnnotMenu.text.’

Choosing the audio option first:

Once you have the option the selected, click on the PDF where you want the annotation to be. A box will pop up like so:

The first field is the where the user enters the title of the audio annotation. The next field lets you add a short description. Both fields are optional, and you can proceed to record the audio and add it whether or not the annotation has a name or description. To record, click on the left most button; to stop, click on the right most button; to hear back what you just recorded, click on the middle button.

For adding text annotations, repeat the process by choosing text instead of audio in the drop down menu. The box that appears has only the tile and description fields:

Once you are done, save the document and open it with any PDF viewer. I use Foxit Reader and here is how the result looked like:

The yellow marker is for the text annotation and the red play button is for audio. You can click on either one and have your annotation displayed/played.

While viewing annotations, your PDF viewer should support them. If you are using the official Adobe Acrobat Reader, you should be just fine. Other popular PDF viewers like Foxit, do the job just as well. However in case your PDF viewer does not support annotation, either text or audio or both, simply keep a copy of the official Acrobat Reader installed on your system.

PDF Annot makes adding audio/text annotations to PDF’s all the more simpler, making life easier for everyone working with PDF files.

The interface is quite self-explanatory. To the left we can see a car (of which the color can be modified) and we a similar one to the right. Options in the bottom left tabs show us the type of streets we can add, the traffic signals, and other models of cars. To the right we see various options of printing, showing the grid, creating a report to go with the sketch, labeling things.

As a sample, I constructed a quick sketching implying a motorcycle head on collision with a car:

Adding the streets, the stop sign, and the vehicles hardly took me two minutes. I can now proceed to create the accident report and open the claims file.

This tool is not only beneficial for people explaining themselves to the authorities, but it can also be helpful to the authorities in better explaining a situation. Perhaps you are a police officer and you need to understand how the skid marks of a car could be in such a direction. When I began writing for the web again a couple of years ago I first used WordPress to publish my content. Coming from a background of writing html in a text editor back in the 90′s, I saw a friend working on his WordPress blog and immediately thought how accessible it was. Anyone could publish web content using this tool I thought.

So I dove in, and WordPress allowed me to have a nice looking site with an article on it after an afternoon’s worth of tweaking the design. It’s a brilliant tool that has a simple interface to a simple end, and it just works.

However, within a month it just wasn’t enough. I soon made my own WordPress theme from scratch in an effort to get my web pages to look more polished. Even then I felt handcuffed by the limitations of working within WordPress.

Before my second month with WordPress was up I had migrated to Joomla!, and I’ve never looked back.

Don’t take any of this as a slam against WordPress, because it isn’t. WordPress is a great tool that has brought the ability to publish web content to millions of users across the globe. We have a much richer web today because WordPress exists.

I had always wondered why WordPress themes looked so amateurish compared to the really good Joomla! designs. Was it some inherent limitation of WordPress, or were there simply no great designers making WordPress themes?

As time has gone by better looking WordPress designs have surfaced. A host of magazine and newspaper style themes exist, some commercial some free. WordPress design is much improved in 2009, but at the end of the day every time I see one of these new themes right after I get over my initial admiration of the layout I realize that I can identify it as a WordPress web site within about two seconds.

WordPress themes and the WordPress backend will continue to improve, but WordPress will remain WordPress, which is exactly as it should be. If the powers that be behind WordPress ever moved it into more CMS-like behavior than it already has I think they would be shooting themselves in the foot. They already have the right product. Refine it, but don’t change it to be like the other CMS solutions. They have different markets.

Ok, so WordPress is the logical choice for the vast majority of people wanting to jump in and put some content on the web. For those WordPress users who need more out of their page design than the standard two or three column blog layout there are more choices today than there were even a year ago. Many of them still look like lipstick on a pig however.

I’ve looked them over, and they are not exact replications, but they have come close to offering WordPress themes that look and function as great as their Joomla! counterparts.

The Mynxx theme for example has VirtueMart integration in the Joomla! version, which is absent in the WordPress theme. I don’t know whether or not if there is a plugin for WordPress that would add the ecommerce functionality back into the Mynxx theme. As I have experience myself, uploading photographs to Facebook is not always an easy task if the user is uploading the pictures from any browser except Internet Explorer. The pictures take more than the required time to load and then the session times out, giving the succinct error “Upload Failed.”

But now, an application is out there that eliminates all photograph uploading problems on Facebook; this application is Adobe Photo Uploader for Facebook.

Since the photo uploading tool on Facebook is based on Adobe Air, Adobe has got this freeware utility out which lets you upload Facebook photographs without dealing with any internet browsers whatsoever.

Today building wireframes is an essential part of creating a website. To run iPlotz, one can either launch the application within the internet browser being used or download the program to system. I prefer the second option, because it gives a faster performance due to its independence from any internet browser.

The ‘Download iPlotz’ button is conveniently located at the top-right side of the homepage. After downloading, the application wastes no time in installation. When you have it functioning, this is how it looks like:

I played around with the tools a little bit, and inserted some objects into the space as a sample. In about a minute, I already had a potential webpage on my screen. Here was what simple dragging and dropping of the tools produced:

The objects in the plane can be moved around to suit the developer i.e. they are all clickable and navigable. The created wireframes and pages can easily be shared online with coworkers or clients. Moreover new pages can be added, existed pages can be modified, and the pages can be exported as images in (PNG and JPG format) or as a PDF file.

iPlotz can also be used to invite other developers who can then comment on your pages, make suggestions or provide you with valuable criticism.

While developing wireframes as a group, you have the ability to appoint different group members different tasks which improves overall functionality.

The concept behind creating a pie-chart is simple enough. However when I set out to make one yesterday, I realized there were not any services that just got the input from you, and created the pie-chart in one simple go. While I found numerous freeware which allowed me to form numerous types of flowcharts, I always had to explore the program first and learn how to make a pie-chart.

I was about to give up on my search to find a super-easy-to-use pie-chart creator but then I found Piecolor.

Piecolor enables the user to make pie-charts with the same ease that one creates a pie-chart in one’s mind.

In the tabs list, there is no ‘+’ button to add a new tab. To open a blank new tab, press one can choose the ‘Open New Tab’ option in the ‘File’ menu or simply press ‘Ctrl+T.’ To open a link on an existing page in a new tab, the user can either click it with the ‘Mouse 3’ click or right click on the link and select ‘Open in New Tab.’ Wyzo developers will want to make opening existing links in new tabs easier for users who do not have ‘Mouse 3’ buttons; a quick solution would be to open links in new tabs by using ‘Ctrl + Left-Mouse-Click.’ Perhaps amends of this will be made in the next version of the browser.

With Wyzo we need not use an external downloading client/manager. The basic principle behind downloading managers is that they when you click on a file to be downloaded, the manager quickly tries to find multiple download locations, and then proceed to download pieces of the file from all over. The same feature has been incorporated into Wyzo which makes downloading through it faster than other browsers. In Wyzo, this downloading method has been renamed Firedownload. Firedownload’s tray icon rests neatly on your taskbar; to pause/resume downloads or have a look at your downloaded files, you can click on the icon.

Wyzo also comes packing its very own Bittorrent client, Firetorrent. Firetorrent can be configured in the browser settings.

The download progress can be monitored by opening a window from Wyzo’s tray icon. Before Wyzo, I used the Google Chrome plus uTorrent combination to download via torrents. Now, along with other Wyzo users, I do not need an excluve Bittorrent client.

Building on the extremely stable code of Firefox, Wyzo’s integrity as a browser stands right at the top of the list. When its impressive stability is fused with the extra features of including a very own download manager and Bittorrent client, Wyzo becomes a browser which is very hard to ignore.

The image above on the right hand side is a rough freehand sketch. Those are simple hand drawn figures annotated with texts which describe what they are. To the left and right of the sketch, two sailboats are drawn. At the top left, the scene is described as a sunset on a beach. Seagulls are also represented to be flying in the air. And at the center of the image, a rough trapezium is drawn of which the annotated text read ‘wedding kiss.’

PhotoSketch analyzes this sketch, and cross-references the text and images with the vast number of images (and their descriptions) online. Because of the sheer number of images available online, many of which do not have correct descriptions (for instance, the image of a dog could have “Meet Tom” as its description) might result in unwanted results. Working around this cross-referencing problem is where the uniqueness of PhotoSketch comes into play.

On their website, PhotoSketch’s team states:

“Although online image search generates many inappropriate results, our system is able to automatically select suitable photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition. Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using the results from two user studies.”

When PhotoSketch runs our original sketch (the one pasted above) it comes up with a number of images which match the descriptions provided on the sketch:

The PhotoSketch program, as if having a mind of its own, combines these images in the best possible way to generate the optimal results which most closely resemble our sketch. But even then, more than one result is possible:

Creating graphics such as banners, buttons and logos requires all the help one can get. There is no telling which tool might spark a creative moment leading to the perfect banner/logo. For that reason, the greater the number of graphics editing resources available, the better.

Your banner starts out as blank. The tab above the banner is a simple online editor where you can quickly design elements by selecting custom sizes, colors, backgrounds, layers, gradients and adding custom texts or badges.

Each button in the top tab lowers a menu which presents features which can be added to the banner. For example, clicking on the third button, presents us with the sort of shapes which can be added. Here is how the shapes drop down menu looks like:

The size of the shapes can be adjusted to match the size of the banner/logo.

Similarly we can add texts with cool fonts and variable sizes to our graphics. We can also move our images closer or farther from the banner.

When we feel the job is done, we can click on the last button to download our result.
